Adored Mortal Follies so was so excited for this and while I did enjoy it, it's far from what I would call a romance. The majority of the plot is focused on the magical and mystical goings on across a number of characters and the two so-called main characters and their romance often took a backseat. But I still had a blast and will never hate an Alexis Hall book.

Also the narration by Nneka Okoye was absolutely perfection. Possibly my favourite audiobook performance of the year.

Thought this book would be impossible to read with its constant jumping of narratives, voices and prose-style. And yet I devoured it in just a few days. Published in 1998, it felt desperately timely and urgently important.

I'm pretty sure this book changed something in my DNA. Dark and deliberate and yet also ambiguous and both alarming and alluring. I also think it will take a while for my stomach to settle too. Please go gently reading it, but read it you must.
