Lightning Strike by William Kent Krueger
4.0
Synopsis:
Lightning Strike is the prequel to the Cork O'Connor series, so it takes us back to the beginning. It's 1963 in Aurora, Minnesota, a small town settled in the forest on the shores of Iron Lake. We meet 14-year-old Cork: His white father Liam is the town sheriff, his mother is of the Objibwe tribe, and Cork is trying to find his place as he strives to balance both worlds. On a lazy summer day, while out with a friend, Cork finds the body of a respected Objiwe in a sacred place that holds great meaning to the tribe. As Liam works to solve the mystery of this death and as Cork himself becomes involved, racial tensions run high. A community and a family find themselves divided as truth and justice are sought.
My thoughts:
This was a superb mystery! Krueger has written yet another book that I feel will be a hit with a wide range of readers. The suspense was compelling. The coming-of-age during the early 60's made me nostalgic for the "simpler times" of lazy summer days full of adventuring outdoors with friends. And the topic of race is as important and relevant today as it was then. Krueger writes with such grace as he threads it all together. Reading this prequel has certainly made me even more interested in picking up the rest of the series.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

His & Hers by Alice Feeney
5.0
Hot dang, this book was GOOD, you guys! Alice Feeney has written the twistiest, most difficult to put down thriller I've read in quite some time. His & Hers is one of those suspense reads in which it is best to go in blind, so I won't delve into a synopsis. I will say, though, that this is one that will keep you guessing until the end. Creepy, fast-paced, fun, and utterly unputdownable, His & Hers is one of my favorite thriller reads of the year so far.
