I have finally got around to this book which, in my opinion, is a pillar of intersectional feminist literature and I wish I would have read it sooner. Angela Y. Davis perfectly analyses the issues within the feminist movement, both historically and in the present, in terms of how they ignore black issues or add to them. Everyone should read this book.

Jean Rhys really knows how to depict two people spiralling into madness.

One of the difficulties with short story collections is that they can be quite a mixed bag. That was my issue with this collection of short stories. Some of these stories really worked for me, particularly the ones earlier on in the collection. However, there were some that I couldn't really get myself to care about.

Who gets to get away with it?
Who gets to be a genius first, a criminal second?

This is an amazing poetry collection that analyses not just the black experience in modern day Britain but also how the media portrays blackness and the historical issues that black people have faced.

I have been woman
for a long time
beware my smile
I am treacherous with old magic
and the noon's new fury
with all your wide futures
promised
I am
woman
and not white.

That later on,
Even in an age unlike our own,
Someone will remember who we are.

This is an amazing glimpse into how previous queer people lived and thought in the past.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 13%.
I’m not particularly prudish but this is already feeling far too dark for me. Then reading through reviews and seeing how many rape scenes there seem to be, yeah not for me.

As is common with anthologies of a wide array of different authors and poets work on a specific topic, I have mixed feelings about this collection. Some pieces of writing, along with some parts of this anthology, worked better for me than other ones. Overall, this was an interesting and important read that I would recommend others to read.
