"'You deserve better than anything I can offer. The other women were just a good time; one night with no strings attached. You? You’re all the strings. You’re the girl you bring home to Mom and Dad, the girl you settle down with, the girl who would force me to grow up.'”

This book grabbed ahold of me & didn’t let me go! The storyline was unexpected: friends since childhood come up with a marriage pact for 10 years in the future, but she’s with someone else when he’s ready to make good on that promise.

"I rush past him to the bathroom and change into his shirt. It’s a mistake; it smells like him. Like a fucking weirdo, I pull the neck of the shirt to my nose and breathe it in. Friends can sniff each other’s clothes. It’s a thing. I’ve read about it somewhere. If I keep to my side of the bed, everything will be fine."

This book is cozy with the small-town vibe, it brings the spice (10+ years of pining will create tons of tension), there’s so much heart, Cassidy is a relatable & lovable character plus Travis is a dream who showers her with love & support to prove he’s the right one for her (who doesn’t love that… oh, & he buys + remodels a lake house for them… so there’s that, too.)

"'That fucking book you love so much? He has no idea what it means to burn for her. There’s fucking lava in my veins, Cass. The love I have for you courses through me. You’re mine to protect...'"

I’m really loving this series & highly recommend this book!

Yet again, we have another surprise from Irene's typical story, & yet again, just like the first book in this series, I loved this one. I especially liked the unique elements of this story: the naps in particular. Here are two people who work unusual shifts: a firefighter who works 24-hour shifts & sometimes spends a couple of days fighting a fire without much of a break + a woman who works several jobs, one of which being overnight shifts as a postpartum nurse. So it only makes sense these characters understand the importance of a good nap. But to have it become a part of their relationship together, using it as a way for them to grow closer? That's amazing & I love how Irene wrote those moments.

"'If I’m not busy, I feel guilty, like I should be doing something, anything... If I’m busy, I can avoid everything.' Except, when I’m with Travis, nothing else exists. I don’t feel like I need to be busy. I was in bed for weeks, and he met me where I was at, made sure I was safe and healthy—or as healthy as anyone can be in the middle of a spiral."

Plus, I love how there's a callback to some of my fave romcoms as Travis does "research" on how to make the grand gesture. And the ending is so funny!

"Antonio folds his arms and sighs, watching until she stops after a few feet. She stands still (slight drunk swaying aside).
'Are you parked this way?' she turns and asks.
'I am not.' He holds out his hand as Alex returns to him, but she doesn’t take it, instead wrapping her arms around his waist.
'Can you fuck me in the car?' she attempts to whisper.
'Jeez, woman.' Antonio’s eyes widen, and he hears a few snickers behind them.
'Oh, shit. Was I not quiet?'
'Not even a little bit, baby.'"

This is a continuation of the story started in book 1, Before Us, & you must read that book first. When you start reading this one, it picks up right where we left off & the bulk of this story continues to build Alex & Antonio’s relationship (plus, we cover about a year’s worth of time, versus the couple of months timeline from book 1). While the mystery/suspense angle is only sprinkled throughout this story, the main focus of the narrative is relationship building. It’s refreshing to see how the MCs’ relationship develops & how the relationships between the side characters flourish, too.

"'... it could only hurt that much because I am in love with you, Alex. It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my entire fucking life... I have learned that I will fall apart without you… Baby, we are complicated, demanding, and inexperienced. But I love you.'"

Keeping her quirky, funny writing-style, Shae gives us a book where we get to see an authentic portrayal of these characters living their lives. This book is really good, yet I have no idea how to describe it because there are so many layers to it. This story taps into several genres & sub-genres without being confusing because at its core, it's a story about these characters navigating their world together. I love the diverse representation, the strong development of our cast of characters in this book & the surprise twists were great. I’m excited to see how the story concludes in book 3!

"She stares icily at her boyfriend, who smiles obliviously. 'You will never be able to touch me again. You’re gonna have to find a new girlfriend. I don’t want your super-sperm anywhere near me, Antonio Moretti...'"

If she is Shadow, then I am Flame. This girl is the very thing I can’t seem to escape—can’t seem to go anywhere without the remnants of her following. Where I am, she is. Whether it’s in the flesh or in the fragments of my mind. And where there is a flame, there is always a shadow. She is my inevitable.

This book feels like the in-between story. Meaning, there isn’t a lot of action or story progression here, so it’s much more character driven. That said, this book is still AMAZING!!! The pining, the freaking slow-burn/enemies to lovers romance, is *chef’s kiss* perfection! I mean it… swooning is guaranteed when you read every interaction between Paedyn and Kai.

And now I’ll drown in the regret that is him... There is no past, no future. Just him. Just us. Just this moment and what we decide to do with it. Death emboldens. The end initiates... My heart aches. Aches to be reunited with the piece he’s stolen from me... I am recklessness incarnate. Until the very end. My mouth meets his. He tastes like longing. Like regret and relief. Like nothing matters but this moment. It’s fervent, like a sinner’s final prayer. And maybe that is what this kiss is. Repentance.

There are also a lot of unexpected surprises in this story, the expansion of this world (I mean, Kai goes all over the place looking for Paedyn), and we get Kitt’s POV while he’s back at the castle. This book really fleshes out the world we were introduced to and explores the ramifications of everything that happened in Powerless.

“Out here I am Kai and nothing more... Out here I am powerless. A monster without an ability to hide behind. An Enforcer free from his masks. A man shouting his love for a woman... I think I would fall on my sword if it meant you mourned me,” he breathes. “And it’s terrifying to think you hold that much power over me... You asked me what my favorite color was once. I’d never even pondered the answer to that question before you. And yet, I realized in that moment that it was blue... It is your eyes... I may be a monster, but if you cut me, I’ll bleed. And if you break my heart, Pae, you’ll break me. So, if even a sliver of your soul longs for mine, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to deserve it."

After Powerful broke my heart wide open, it was refreshing to return to the banter between Kai & Paedyn. However, the pining? The yearning? The sizzle? Whew! The way these two have me “just one more chapter”-ing until well past an acceptable bedtime... ugh, I just love them so much! And for anyone who “ships” them, this will make you happy... but the cliffhanger ending is borderline criminal.

He is my anchor, and I am willing to sink, so long as it is with him... Because uttering the words feels like a death sentence. Every person I’ve ever loved has left me. I’m cursed to lose in love. But that is what I feel for him, what I’ve felt even when I hated him. Because hating him was easier than hating myself for wanting him... Because wherever I love, people die. And I’d rather love him silently than mourn him loudly.

While I still prefer duet-style narration, the actors in this story beautifully delivered the emotion necessary for this book. I also liked the addition of Kitt’s voice, so we’re able to see how he’s managing life post-Powerless too. Watching how the characters grow in this book is what makes it so great. It’s a true sequel, in that regard, because it picks the story up right where we left it in Powerless & dives deeper in the each character.

I’m so unused to someone wanting me. Choosing me. Finding me worth the effort. Because I’m completely undeserving of it. Of her. If darkness is the absence of light, then that is what I am when she is not around. And I wonder how I’ve stumbled this long without her to guide me...
I’ve spent my whole life wishing to be wanted. And here he is, begging me to let him... He is my fantasy. This is my reality. With that realization, all hesitation vanishes. And I kiss him.

This novella gives us the POV of a supporting character from book 1 while big events were happening (you have to read book 1 first). Boy, oh boy, this was an emotional ride. Without spoilers, it’s strange to any time we move through an established timeline, but learn new things because we get to see a new POV. So, while many of the events in this novella weren’t new per se, witnessing the Trials, balls, etc. from Adena and Mak’s POVs was interesting. This is significantly more emotional than the last book (hence why there’s an emotional rating on this graphic) and it’s fast-paced because of the shorter format. But we still get swoon-y lines, colorful writing, lovable characters and we get to see some book 1 faves.

“I count the stars,” she says softly. “To help me sleep... I always wondered how something could shine so bright, even while being swallowed in darkness... I hope they know how admired they are up there,” she murmurs. “I mean, I count them before bed every night.”
I shake my head at the sight of her admiring something far duller than she. “I’m quite sure that even the stars are envious of you... Because one day—far from now—you will be up there beside them, outshining every single one." ...
"And will you be beside me up there?”
“If I should be so lucky.”
“Promise me,” she murmurs sternly. “I don’t want to be alone.”
I nod against her hair. “I promise, Dena.”

Okay, real talk. This book wrecked me. Without spoilers, let me say knowing the basic outline of events (since this book takes place during book 1’s timeline), does NOT make it easier to read. It just makes it more crushing.

I’ve never been much good with pain. Never needed to be. But I refuse to be ashamed of my softness. Gentleness is the strength that fragility lacks.

It would be one thing, if there was a reason behind it. But as I’m writing this, I’ve already finished Reckless, the next book in this series, & it doesn’t seem like Powerful was necessary to understand the series. Like, are new characters gonna prove important to this world? It doesn’t seem like it. So why hurt us like this, Lauren? Why?! 😭 Maybe it will pay off in book 3? I don’t know... but I still loved this book... it just hurts.

Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism by Jeffrey Toobin

challenging informative reflective sad tense slow-paced

4.5

"... these acts of terror were not random lightning strikes by demented individuals; they were targeted political acts of right against left."

(Gonna do my best to keep this within the guidelines, but the topic makes it hard.) Alright, first, let me say, I am a total geek for political & “bad guy” communication. I literally have a degree in Communication Studies to match my passion of analyzing speech & its motivating power. And my dream job is to be a speech writer, work on a political communications team, or be an analyst at a federal 3-letter agency (FBI, CIA, DHS, DoD, DoS, etc.). So, this book really brought my inner nerd out because Jeffrey clearly laid out how Timothy McVeigh viewed the state of the country before taking matters into his own hands with his devastating action & how communication from right-wing figures like Rush Limbaugh, or publications like The Spotlight & The Turner Diaries, impacted his views on the state of the country.

"McVeigh understood the potential of his right-wing compatriots for joining him in violent action. “I believe there is an army out there, ready to rise up, even though I never found it,” McVeigh told his attorney Jones. But that doesn’t mean his army wasn’t there. McVeigh failed to find his army because he had no efficient way to locate and mobilize potential allies; in other words, McVeigh didn’t have the internet, in particular social media. As it turned out, there was an army of McVeigh’s heirs out there, but it took the invention of cyberspace for the soldiers to find one another."

Although he's definitely a villain in the American story, McVeigh is one example of a much larger beast lurking in the shadows. (Well, not so much in the shadows anymore.) And I really don't want to get into a political debate, because this is not that. This is about communication & how it's been used to radicalize individuals to take action against their government. This is also not just an American problem. There have been similar right-wing/conservative movements in other nations across the world. One side has been using inflammatory language to stoke an increase in violence & they have only grown since McVeigh's time in the 90s. These homegrown threats must be called out as such & held accountable for their actions: not just the actions of the violent actors, but the actions of those who used language to fuel the spark of rebellion until it became a devastating inferno.

"McVeigh told Jones, the “kill ratio” of child-to-adult victims was 1:5 in Waco, whereas in Oklahoma City it was 1:10, so his actions were not as “inhumane” as those of the federal government. McVeigh’s rationalization for murdering the children in the Murrah building provided a useful reminder of his soulless fanaticism."

"...complaining that no one had criticized Truman when he dropped the bomb on innocent women and children. He said that there was no point in bombing the Oklahoma building at night, because then all the damage would just be to property, and the government would just build it again. He said this is the nineties, and you ‘can’t make a statement without a body count.’"

Again, as a political, history & communication nerd, this book completely fascinated me. The argument that McVeigh could’ve been more dangerous if he’d found & connected to others who shared his viewpoints, immediately proves how dangerous the current right-wing extremist movement is. Today’s figures have social media, strong internet connection, etc. to strengthen their networks & plan events. McVeigh didn’t & he knew, at the time, his act was limited but he hoped to inspire others to rise up. In a way, he did… it just took a couple of decades. This book is firstly about McVeigh, a villain in the American story, but it’s clear his & the extremist views he held, remain a prominent part of society & it’s important to recognize it, name it, & work against it to smother the flame before vital institutions burn to the ground.

Before Us: A Contemporary Romance Trilogy by Shae Green

"'...he’ll be the perfect gentleman and make you feel like a queen for the night. Frankie and I’ve dubbed it the Moretti Experience. And it’s not a ruse; if he decides to give you his attention, you get his full attention. The problem is, no one can hold onto it for long. You basically have to sign on a dotted line acknowledging it’s a temporary lease.'
Alex cringes. 'That doesn’t make him sound that great. I mean, it’s not like I’m looking to fall in love with the guy, but sheesh. He sounds like the ultimate fuckboy. Just in cursive.'"

It’s not common that a contemporary romance story is told in a 3rd person multi-POV, but this trilogy is & it completely fits the characters. While it took me a while longer to get attached to the characters, because I’m not as familiar with this narrative/observer storytelling style, I did fall in love with these unique characters & this mysterious story. There are so many layers to this story; it’s so much more than a romance, because there’s a hacking angle, a subtle mafia angle, a heist angle, a dysfunctional family/family secrets angle, & an emotional angle all wrapped around a romance between two unlikely characters. They’re quirky, funny, lived through some trauma & are opposites in so many ways, but somehow, they complete one another. It makes for such an entertaining read for part one!

"'The thing is, men are ruled by emotions just as much as they believe women are. One specific emotion—and that’s pride. Think about it. Men will go to war over territory. Over women. Over policies and ideals. All to show who’s more superior. Who’s more right. They’ll decimate each other in the process, and the cycle repeats itself every generation. Doesn’t that sound exhausting?'”

This is such an unexpected read for me because of its multi-layered story. Just when I thought I understood or could predict where the story was going, another layer or twist would be added. I was definitely intrigued by the mystery/suspense angle to the story & loved the quirky sense of humor from our FMC. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I'm already part way through book 2 & am eager to see how the twist plays out.

And, I'd like to give a shoutout to Shae's dedication: "For all of us who have been told we're both too much and not enough." *chef's kiss*

"... glance at Nick, who nods subtly at me. Like he's proud of me. And I beam back at him. I want him to be proud of me. I want him to look at me like this, all the time. He knows the story, but he doesn't truly know what I've been through. But he still looks at me like this moment has lit up his day. It has me all sorts of gooey on the inside. Nick tugs me closer, leaving a kiss on my forehead that has me jumping out of my skin."

Taking a step outside her Love & City Lights series, Ally gives us an adorable small town Christmas story centering around two lovable characters with banter that's guaranteed to make you laugh. This is such a simple story, but it really checks all of the boxes romance fans want in a holiday read, so I highly recommend it!

"'Keep talking like that and I'll show you what it means to be naughty.'
Her eyes flash. 'Oh, I like this side of the math teacher. Sweet and spicy, all in one.'
I shake my head. 'Drink your wine and fluff your branch.' ...
'Now all I can think about is every naughty tree euphemism I've ever heard. I mean, 'fluff your branch’? Mr. Monroe, the children!'
I can't help but laugh along with her. 'To be fair, every single time I mention 'putting up the tree' at this point, I have to stop myself from saying 'erecting the tree.'' She laughs harder, one hand over her chest... This is what I want my Christmases to look like. Laughter, red wine, and someone like Noelle fluffing my branch. It feels so easy."

Ever wanted a spicier Hallmark Christmas story? Look no further! This was such a cute story filled with every cliché about the holiday season you can think of: there’s a holiday fair, a school play, a town-wide tree lighting, parade float decorating, and more! I really liked the relationship between “Saint” Nick & Noelle because their banter is absolutely hilarious. And the fact her community service “punishment” was because she egged her dad’s house? HILARIOUS! This book has all of the small town cozy vibes you could possibly want from a cozy, holiday read. And, if you were curious if the Clark Kent look-alike math teacher could “match the criminal’s freak?” The answer is yes, yes he can.

"'Torturing me is your favorite pastime, isn't it?'
I nod... 'But afterward we get to enjoy the parade,' I say, in a mocking excited tone.
She rolls her eyes. 'The harder you work at your Cindy-Lou Who act, the harder I work at Grinching.'"

First, let me say, the chapter titles are super funny. And this cover art? It's perfection & means even more once you've read the story.😍 Speaking of the story, this one is a perfect blend of cozy, small town, Christmas & romance. But when the spice hits...🫠 whew...😮‍💨 dayum! Plus, Emily describes a drink, the Naughty But Nice cocktail, blending whiskey with orange & cranberry juice & ginger that sounds amazing! I think I'm gonna give it a try this season. I'm not normally a whiskey girlie, but I've officially been influenced.🥃

“If you interrupt me while I’m listening to my trees, I’m sending you home.”
Brooks laughs. “Okay. No talking while you’re listening to the trees.”
“And no rolling your eyes at me if it’s taking too long or asking when we’re leaving.”
“Check and check.” Brooks makes two check marks in the air. “I’ll follow you around like a little puppy and tell Hunter when we’re ready.”

Something I always do when reading a book is to read the entire acknowledgments & thank yous from the author. In this book, Emily gives us a peek behind the curtain with this book's inspiration. Honestly, I kinda want to spend a day with Emily & her friend because they sound like fun, haha. When you read this book, take a look at the story behind this story... it's great.

“What meaning does a half-naked mermaid have?” Brooks laughs.
“Mer
man,” I correct, poking him in the muscular abs. “You just wish your abs were as good-looking as this.”
Brooks pulls his hoodie up, flashing me his stomach.
Fuck. Me. I should not have started this. How does Brooks not know the way he has me drooling over him?
“I think they are.”

This is peak Emily Silver right here: a cozy & cute story, with characters that make you swoon, a fur baby to steal the show & a romance guaranteed to warm your heart. It’s basically everything you want & need in a holiday romance! Plus, Emily has given us a world that’s open & accepting of queer men, which is refreshing & feels like a warm hug. This book is filled with nothing but love, understanding, compassion, spicy spice, laugh-out-loud comedy & TONS of holiday vibes guaranteed to leave you clutching your heart, kicking your feet & maybe even decorating your own rainbow merman ornament while wearing a homemade “ugly” sweater. So, can we all live in Moose Falls now, please? Because I am totally ready to find a tree that speaks to me from the Naughty Pine Tree Farm & get my holiday season started in proper style!

"... I love you, Charlie. More than I ever thought possible. I never knew this was a kind of love that I could have. It shocks me every day that you chose me. That you love me and that I, for some lucky reason, get to love you back.”
“I think I’m the lucky one...”

"'I’m tougher than I look, I assure you. The strongest weapon a woman has at her disposal is that she is often underestimated,' I answer with a small smile. 'And I wield that all the time.'”

When I started reading this, I thought this was a copycat of The Hunger Games. Don't get me wrong, that series is one of my faves, but mirroring its formula feels unnecessary. That said, the more I kept reading, the more unique elements of this story emerged. The Trials are a series of challenges, there are less contestants, more than one survivor is allowed but there's only one winner. Plus, there's quite the variation in abilities people have without it being too confusing.

"... we are trading off blows and blocks as we toy with one another. It’s like a dance, and she is a fierce partner... One minute we’re flirting and the next we’re fighting—possibly even both at the same time. I can’t seem to figure this vicious girl out."

Okay, so I get it now… this is a great book! It’s very “The Hunger Games” but with a unique twist. The relationship dynamic between Kai and Paedyn is amazing (some of their scenes are my absolute favorite). Plus, the way the Trials are set up leaves me on the edge of my seat with anticipation of what’s going to happen next. And it’s interesting to have so many different kinds of enabled people that society can’t keep track of all the different power types, allowing Paedyn to fake an ability in order to blend in. Some moments broke my heart, some made me laugh out loud, but all of them were entertaining and engaging. Highly recommend this book and look forward to the rest of the series!

"I’ve never been looked at like it’s a privilege to be in my presence, an honor to hold my gaze, a gift to get a glimpse of me. Not until I met him. His mask slips, splinters, shatters, leaving only a boy beholding a girl like she is worthy of his wanting... I can’t help but long for this boy who has saved my life more times than I care to admit. This boy who is equally calculating and charming, equally cool and caring. The one who’s tended to my wounds, learned about my past, been my distraction when I needed it most. The one who understands me."

As for the audio, I'm a bit spoiled & have only listened to duet or full cast audiobooks, but dual narration makes up the majority of the audiobook space. And this book is narrated in dual form: the male POV chapter is read entirely by the male narrator & vice versa, meaning he reads female parts & she reads some male parts that occur within their specified chapters. So, this is not my favorite style because when the narrators switch genders, it takes me out of the performance a little bit. That said, it didn't make me hate the narration or take much away from the story's impact because both of these narrators did a fantastic job (especially with the banter moments).

As with the 1st book in this series, I really liked Wildfire. We went away from Maple Hills campus to follow characters as they were summer camp counselors & it all felt very nostalgic. The spice was more seamless & on par with the scene, the banter definitely delivered, we got to see more JJ & a dash more Henry (two of my faves), & I liked the relationship between Russ & Aurora.

“I’ve always known I need validation like I need air and, although I don’t think he’s exactly the same, we are very similar. People have made us feel like we’re less than we are, and those opinions are buried deep in us both, like weeds. Every drop of self-doubt waters the soil, and once they start to grow it feels impossible to stop. But it isn’t impossible, it just takes someone to rip them out by the root, over and over if needed. We’re so different, and yet so similar, and part of me is starting to believe that’s the perfect mix.”

I felt like the addiction angle wasn’t handled as well as I would’ve liked (either get down into it or keep this a lighter, feel-good story), but it’s one way to give a little representation to people with addicts in their family without being a super heavy book. All of our experiences with addiction, mine included, are unique to the individual & this was Russ’s experience. Russ definitely wasn’t on my bingo card to get his own story so soon, having been a tiny character in book 1, but I’m so happy we got this glimpse into his life & love story!

“‘... you’re not going to scare me with your feelings or your experiences, I promise. I know it’s not going to undo the other stuff, but I’m choosing to be here, and nothing you say to me is going to make me change my mind.’”

While I’m not a huge fan of “insta-love” stories, this couple’s fast-developing feelings needed to be reaffirmed & earned throughout the narrative, which they made sure to do. I liked the change of scenery by shifting the setting to a summer camp (w/ nosy children), making the story unique. I also liked checking in with the hockey-housemates, especially re-integrating JJ because I love him. And I’m putty when the MMC is a cinnamon roll, which Russ totally is (plus, he’s got that shy nerdy thing, which is great too). His pep-talks to hype up his confidence, her finally feeling worthy of being doted on, their friends chuckling at the pining couple? All fantastic!
