Zauner’s prose is beautiful. Her openness brings a tear to the eye. I was awed by the eloquent way in which she shared her truth. I could feel the love between Zauner and her mother radiating off the pages.

I picked up this book because I heard nothing but amazing things online. To be honest, it didn’t live up to the hype. While definitely a page turner (I was dying to see what happened next) I think that the writing style could have flowed a lot better, and I was quite dissatisfied with the ending everyone dies, which seems to me like boring choice on the part of the author, there is also a justification of suicide/a point where a character has the ability to stop another character from committing suicide but doesn’t because “she trusts her” the characters development was kind of there but it seemed half baked at some points, like certain characters could have been more developed and they lacked nuance. Overall, the story does a lot more “telling” than “showing”. I wish this had been developed a bit more because at its core it is a very engaging story, it was a quick read for me and got me out of a reading slump. Overall it was decent, but not worth the hype it got!
Moderate: Domestic abuse and Sexual assault
