Not bad, but the ending didn't have any resolution -- it really kind of fizzled.

Some of these were very charming and some were just a little confusing. I see their value as a snapshot of their day and location, but I didn't always enjoy them. That is the problem with short stories: they tend to be uneven across a collection, just because of what they are.

Very unpleasant. The frustrating part is that the writing was absolutely beautiful, but the ratio of corpses to characters was just awful, and the vividness of description that Giono has mastered was equally applied to pleasant and abhorrent.

Sometimes a bit heavy-handed but still comical and fascinating.

Lovely and poignant. I wish more authors wrote with this apparent mastery and beauty.
