yes, it is worthy of its acclaim and hype. at times the sentences would click into place and become transcendent and the old gods of literature would shine down upon it. and other times my weak brain glazed over passages. it truly is a feat though and would be even better with a reread. 

famously horrific/gory/violent but as a highly squeamish person I did okay! I also recommend having a) conversational Spanish skills or b) google translate nearby

wanted to enjoy this but couldn’t get with the writing style 

this is a novel so full of itself! I feel duped! I grew up in churches in the US south and was eager for something interesting, bold, insightful and this was not it. no subtlety to be found here

expertly crafted and the most unsettling book I’ve ever read. challenging, hypnotic, torrential

languid & decadent, chicken soup for the recent college grad’s soul. beautiful language if not sometimes a tad slow.  recommend for people who are sold on the genuine power of art (i am!!!)

a manifesto on veganism and justice and solitude. made me terrifically sad mostly but I so enjoyed the writing and the thought-provoking-ness of it all

I love magical realism so much that, even though I had an inkling about the final reveal, I wanted it to just completely unravel into apocalyptic chaos. however I found it still satisfying, and it wrapped the book up in a package almost like an Agatha Christie novel. not mad but I would still read the magical version in a heartbeat

sweet and sticky like candy, so glad I didn’t fully turn from miss rooney after finishing ‘normal people’ 

I was so intimidated by this book but WOW I thought it was highly readable and just so good and so so worth a read. a bucket list book ✅ (also dunya is a #girlboss)
