🌶️🌶️🌶️3 / 5 -The smut in this novel uses explicit language and a decent amount of detail. We have a good balance of plot and romance. There are several spicy scenes throughout the book, at least two or three, but potentially even more.
The Troupes / Kinks include:
Masked MMC, Therapist x Inmate relationship, Enemies to Lovers, Revenge, Primal Play, Knife Play, Serial Killer

TLDR
This book had me captivated from start to finish. It is dark, it is compelling, and it is a wild ride from start to finish. I honestly wasn't sure if this book would be too dark for me based on the pitch, but I've been trying to push my dark romance reading further and further to test the boundaries of what I like and I am so glad I read this book! It may genuinely end up being one of my favorite books of the year. There are so many parts of this that verge on psychological thriller and I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed every step of the journey. Lora Darc has an incredible handle on pacing and relationship development.

The Romance
Eve and Emery's dynamic is incredibly compelling. The build of tension and anticipation as Eve slowly untangles the mystery of why Emery killed her family had me absolutely unable to put the book down.  Emery has so much trauma and does so many awful things, but I found myself liking him and enjoying his banter with Eve before we even get the full context into why he is the way that he is. Also, though the smut doesn't kick off until fairly far into the plot, it is excellent and quite spicy. I have so much to say about these two, but I want to avoid spoiling anything so!!! Just go read it!

Final Thoughts
As always with dark romance, definitely mind the trigger warnings! Also, this book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. I sometimes struggle with those, but this one didn't bother me and it so clearly perfectly sets up the second book in this duology. Thankfully, the second book comes out in just a few months and I am absolutely dying to get my hands on it. I can't wait to discover where the rest of Eve and Emery's journey leads, because I absolutely want them to have to have a happy ending no matter how unlikely it may seem.

I was given an ARC of this book in order to provide an honest review!

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/ 5 - Featuring many explicit scenes with lots of detailed language. This book is heavier on the spice, but the plot is still there and doing something interesting. Also, it's at least a little kinky.

The Smut / Kinks include:
cock warming, rough sex, praise kink, anal, adult toys, choking, spitting, dom/sub interactions, & genital piercings

I am absolutely in love with how unhinged these two are and the duel narration in this audio book is fantastic! I think my favorite thing about this book was how much Rowan was immediately into Sloane from the first moment they met. Sloane and Rowan have a deeply compelling banter and dynamic. I love that she calls him pretty boy! I love that when they bicker she'll say "you're the worst" or "I hate you", and he'll respond with "you'll love me someday." I love how funny they both are, both with each other and in their internal narration. If you enjoy a couple who are deeply unhinged individually and together, and who bicker like an old married couple, this book may be for you!

Both characters felt fully fleshed out with compelling other relationships in their life, like Rowan with his brothers and Sloane with her best friend (and practical sister) Lark. Their backstories are compelling, and they each have a nice personal arc in addition to the overarching plot and romance. I am really looking forward to seeing where this series goes from here!

Of course, keep an eye on those trigger warnings as this is a dark romance between two serial killers who kill other serial killers. I was warned about the cannibalism (the main couple are not into it, but some of the people they hunt are), so I was braced for a lot, but honestly I would say there are only two big scenes/situations where it comes into play.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/ 5 - Featuring many explicit scenes with lots of detailed language. This book is heavier on the spice, but the plot is still there and doing something interesting. Also, it's at least a little kinky.

The Smut / Kinks include:
DP, DVP, somnophilia, non con/dub con, consensual non-consent, period play, forced orgasms, handcuffing, spanking, impact play, breath play, edging, degradation, voyeurism, sharing, chasing, masks, spit play, snowballing, toy usage.
Gosh, don't you love it when a book needs like a whole paragraph for kinks?

I am really enjoying this series of interconnected stand alones and I am very much looking forward to Poe and Em's full length novels! As with the novella Noire Moon (which is about Poe meeting her boys), you should definitely mind the trigger warnings on this one.

Though Fox, Ven, Ky and Thorne are not quite as kinky as Poe and her men, they are still very kinky and have quite a lot of sex in this book. All three men are walking red flags, but of course if you are like me that's a selling point. One of my favorite things about this why choose romance was that it is extremely polyamorous and all of the men have compelling romances with each other. In fact, even though the word isn't used, several characters even describe the feeling of compersion (feeling joy at watching your partner be happy with another partner), which made me extremely happy as a polyam person. I really enjoyed all the various dynamics, but I honestly think one of my favorites had to be Ven & Ky. They have serious grumpy/sunshine energy and were a delight to read. Also, I love that they already had a pre-established relationship before all four of them got together in this book.

The only thing that kept this book from being a 5 star read for me was some particular quirks of Fox's perspective that I typically struggle with and primarily find in very heterosexual erotica. Fox would occasionally say things like "my ovaries start dancing with joy" or describing a guy as "pussy-nip". She tends to become a useless puddle around this guys, especially towards the beginning of the story. Some of the turns of phrase felt a little cringe-y to me (and I have, for the most part, tried to kill the part of me that cringes), but it wasn't prevalent enough to get me to walk away and she really grew on me as a protagonist over the story. If that doesn't bother you and the trigger warnings don't scare you off, I can still confidently recommend this book if you are an enjoyer of dark romance and properly red flag men!  I got this book for the hot and fucked up smut. For me, this book delivers and left me wanting to read more by this author, so I'm calling it a win!

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/ 5 - We have broken the spice scale! This is either pure erotica with absolutely no downbeats in between or the plot is just an excuse to move from one sex scene to another. I may make an exception and grant a book this spice level if it breaks my brain with how kinky and hot the smut is.

The Smut / Kinks include:
Degradation, Knife Play, Primal/Chase Play, Spanking, Voyeurism, Power Play, Orgasm Denial, DP, Masks

Okay, so, this book is definitely not for everyone. Was it for me? Yes, definitely! It was very fucked up and also incredibly hot. However, I caution you to seriously mind the trigger warnings on this one folks. This is on the more intense end of dark romance and, since it's a novella, we don't get too much insight into the motivations (or even identities) of the three walking red flags that are the love interests here. The novella is very honest about being a prequel, and this ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger (but not one I was upset with).

If you want to know what the cliffhanger is:
After having sex with the three masked men, the main character wakes up at home to discover:
1. She doesn't know how she got home.
2. She has a new phone with only three contacts in it.
3. Her three masked men have definitely been stalking her even before this party and definitely intend to continue to do so.

Okay, that being said I'm super excited to read the rest of their story when it comes out in March! I've been slowly increasing the intensity of stalker romance I'm reading to see what I can handle and apparently I can handle and enjoy quite a lot. I highly recommend you check this out if you want a quick to read and well written novella with stalking, masked men, and a MMMF polyamourous romance where the men are also into each other.

Also worth noting: even though the main character is quite scared at times, she is also super into all of the smutty things that happen and she did go to a sex club looking for this type of thing. Of course, she didn't quite know what she was bargaining for and we'll see how she feels in the novel proper about the things she discovered at the end.

Okay, I'm off to go read everything else Elliot Rose has written <3

I am really bad with reviewing every book in a series, especially with manga. This was very good and had delivered the monsterfucking I was hoping for. I hope the author picks this series back up and continues it, since there is definitely more plot to explore here, but I am satisfied with where this book leaves the relationship even if it isn't continued.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/ 5 - We have broken the spice scale! This is either pure erotica with absolutely no downbeats in between or the plot is just an excuse to move from one sex scene to another. This is not a complaint, when I read erotica I do it intentionally.

The Smut / Kinks include:
pleasure / service dom, overstimulation, chase / primal play, exhibitionism / sex in public
The author actually doesn't have a list on their website or at the front of the book, so some things might have been left out since I am adding this after the fact <3

I was pleasantly surprised with just how much I enjoyed this fun little bdsm holiday novella. It is the perfect thing to read this time of year to get me in the mood for the spooky season and the smut was good. I am much more picky about heterosexual smut (especially just straight erotica), but this one cleared the "is this hot and well enough written" bar. Sure, this is definitely not safe bdsm practices, but the author fully warns for that in the front of the book. That's not what we are here for! We are here for a brain off smutty good time and this absolutely delivered. I mostly read a lot of actually pretty fucked up dark romance, and this was not that, but I was super here for it anyway. Dorian and Eve's relationship is actually super sweet, don't let the theoretical enemies set up fool you. Also, more people should write things with service/pleasure oriented doms. A common complaint I have with BDSM erotica is it being pretty basic and/or actually vanilla, so I am here for anything that gives me some variety and this delivers. I am def going to be checking out this author's other work, and I owe great thanks to Probably Smut's newsletter (Smutty Sunday) for introducing me to this fun lil novella.

Okay, it's official, I have a new author to add to my list of favorites. After reading Exposed, I wanted to check out other work by H.L. Day/H.L. I'm going to update this with more details once it's not 5:30 am (I ate this in one sitting) but in summary: just read it!

This book was an insightful exploration of healing from PTSD and trauma as well as a high drama contemporary sapphic romance set in Hollywood. Even though this book fell slightly lower on my rating scale because it wasn't necessarily the type of narrative I look for, I think it is an incredible book that achieves what it sets out to do. The vibes are very what if Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada ran a movie studio instead of a fashion magazine, with the addition that instead of trying to carve her plucky young employee into a version of herself, the two of them instead fell deeply in love and she instantly tries to push her employee away with cruelty to protect herself.

The Spice Level
🌶️🌶️🌶️/ 5 - The smut in this novel uses explicit language and lots of detail. We have a good balance of plot and romance. There are several sex scenes throughout the book, at least 2 or 3 but likely more. (In this case, more. This book was right on that 3-4 spice border, but the book leans more plot heavy and isn't kinky so I left it at 3)

Audrey and Neve get to be SO HORNY and so messy and so passionate. So many sapphic romances are only allowed to be so chaste and sweet and I love getting to see a high smut passionate sapphic romance.

What I Liked
  • They said they were delivering an ice queen with a slow burn and by god they delivered. Also, despite being an absolute witch and downright cruel at times, I appreciated that Neve Blackthorne did have good standards. She is actually passionate about making good movies, she cares about delivering good representation, and she champions union work and making movies the right way.
  • I like that she actually gets to be cruel, but redeemable. Plus, scary competent older woman who will destroy you if you cross her is so many people's exact type.
  • That being said, my favorite character was Helena Moore, Neve's therapist. I thought the framing every chapter of starting with a therapy session was clever and well used. Helena is compassionate, funny, relatable, and, most importantly, doesn't take any of Neve's shit. Truly I don't know if I would have made through the whole book without these scenes slowly making Neve change and grow.
  • This book is an excellent exploration of a person finally being forced to deal with their trauma and PTSD so they stop hurting themselves and everyone around them.
  • Audrey Avens is great! I love that she gets to go and make her own career after Neve pushes her away. I love that she goes and dates other people and still lives her life.

What I Struggled With
Okay, so first and foremost this just turned out to not be as much my speed. If the above appeals to you, this book really achieves exactly what it set out to do. That being said, here's what didn't work as well for me in particular:
  • Listen, this is a midlife crisis novel. I think it's important for these books to exist, and historically this sort of book has been written only about heterosexual cisgendered white men. So, I think this is an important book that should exist, especially because it deals really well with mental health and trauma. That being said, I don't like coming of age novels, and a midlife crisis novel is the same sort of narrative but for adults.
  • I can tolerate a lot of mistreatment between love interests. I love enemies to lovers. However, this is very one sided cruelty with no extenuating circumstances. It's hard to watch how aggressively Neve drives Audrey away with needless cruelty. It's an important part of their arc, but I struggled with it.
  • This is a very messy and high drama sort of romance, which can be fun! However, I just wanted any sort of communication between them any amount earlier in the book. They finally get together very late in the game.

Anyway, if these things won't bother you, please go support this sapphic romance! The payoff at the end is absolutely worth it, and I did enjoy this book despite it being outside my normal taste! I think, for me, the best thing about getting book boxes is it helping me stretch outside my comfort zone and try new things.

After reading Secret XXX and Therapy Game, I was really looking forward to reading this creator's take on a dragon romance and I was quite pleased with the first volume. I was surprised there was no spice in the first volume since I've read Megaru Hinohara's other work, but this one is definitely slower burn than the other ones due to the characters and their personalities.

Rin and Chiharu are a very fun couple! Rin is extremely earnest, and it's very fun to watch him try to figure out basic human things. Rin is incredibly persistent in attempting to court Chiharu despite Chiharu trying to drive him away, but it's so clearly a case of orange/blue morality of a god that has never been told no before and it's plays out quite humorously. Since he isn't an aggressive guy and isn't pushy about sex, it doesn't come off as creepy or difficult to read for me, but definitely keep in mind the premise if you are uncomfortable with this sort of set up! Chiharu starts to melt to Rin's affection rather quickly, and by the end of volume one
he is even actively stops trying to get rid of him and gets sad when he isn't around
. Chiharu really seems to push people away because he doesn't feel worthy of love, so honestly they feel like a perfect match. If you like danmei and enjoy Scum Villain, Rin has extremely strong Luo Binghe energy and I love it.

I am looking forward to rolling right into the second volume! In comparison to most manga, I appreciate Megaru Hinohara's work so much partially because all of her stories wrap up nicely in just a few volumes. I am crossing my fingers that we get proper monsterfucking in the next volume (we know Rin can shapeshift individual body parts so 👀)

Truly I'm so bad at remembering to review manga volumes when I eat multiple ones in one sitting. I just realized I never left a review here. I basically have the same feelings as with volume two, so I've copy and pasted it here with some tweaks in case you want to know what I think about this series but don't want to click around more and find my other review:
I enjoyed this volume quite a lot! This really falls into the category of gay relationship dynamics that I enjoy, in this case: intense top / bottom who likes to complain and be a little bullied. Absolutely no complaints from me! The smut was fun as always. I understand why Eui-joon doesn't think Gunwoo is serious about him, but I hope next volume Gunwoo will be able to show Eui-joon that he does really like him! This is a fun manga I am definitely going to try to stay up to date with. The dynamic is fun, the art is full color and gorgeous, and the relationship feels like it's moving at a solid pace.
