The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu

I only wanted to read it for its historical importance. But I recall have no interest in the pearl clutching that was done in very early Japanese high society/royalty. Genji was a slut and had a lot of children, who were also slutty.

Unfortunately for me “he went into her inner chambers” is literal and not figurative.

If you like reading novels of manners you might like this. But it’s too much of a “linear” tale for me to be interested.

Was funny to see the same complaints older generations make about younger ones. We’ve been saying “the kids don’t read” and “no one wants to learn instruments anymore” forever.

Maybe I’m not smart enough for this one.

Cute but there are better books about women who depend on marriage to live that aren’t as puritanical. Which is saying a lot. But I’m also not 13 so maybe the target audience would like this more. It was at least pleasant

Interesting how much her not being religious comes up. Was not expecting that.

Interesting! I got a little impatient towards the end but over all, enjoyable. Still like A Secret History more.

Only giving this 3 stars because I actually paid attention. But otherwise it was sooooo precious (derogatory) and if you told me a conservative wrote it I would believe you.

Also???? The amount of jokes that casually insinuate pedophilia amount to at least two. Which is just downright weird like what are you doing?

I made it past my hatred of the mother to finish. Only mildly annoyed by the end. Clichéd . I understand why it’s a Rory Gilmore book.

Strong case to be made to abolish the nuclear family. Some people should NOT be parents and should not have to be by accident of birth.
