this somehow managed to capture the exact same feel of the first book so while i was once again thrown by the lighthearted wish-fulfillment (
not alex literally just getting her parents to agree with her attending the crazy fantasy academy but they also MOVE TO ANOTHER WORLD kakdhsjdnd
it preserves the tone very well
though the action did get VERY climactic at the end i hope it continues to be very wish fulfillment

was a bit thrown by the happy-go-lucky tone of the book but i got used to it and ended up having a great time hanging out with alex and her friends. there wasn't much depth but i had fun and it was a fast easy read.
i'm interested to see if this tone will be maintained in the following books. if not, i think it'll definitely feel like whiplash. also i'll fucking scream if there's a love triangle between her and the two boys. i love them as friends and i think forcing them into a romance will cheapen the whole thing >:( but we'll see

i don’t think i understand the economy well enough to really engage with this book but the author’s conversational voice was nice
i already knew the economy was fake and this just reinforces that

it was good, but i didn't enjoy it? horror is always hard to rate and review like that i guess, because a good horror book isn't generally one you enjoy. but this was well-written, good characters, kept me invested even though at times i really wished i wasn't reading it. it wasn't too scary, more horrifying than terrifying, so it revolted me and engrossed me

i'm giving it a good rating, but i had a bad time. i don't think i would recommend this to anyone, i wouldn't reread it, if i could do it all over again i don't know if i would read it, it did not add anything to my life, and in fact i think it made me worse. solid read!

the premise, setting, and characters of this book made it a solidly enjoyable read, but it found it someone chaotic/confusing as i couldn’t really get a proper feel for the characters and what they were doing and why they were doing it
until MAJOR PLOT THINGS started happening in the last quarter of the book and sent me REELING
i was surprisingly devastated by key’s death because i kind of liked him and was rooting for him but then the way it all turned out in the end MADE SO MUCH SENSE AND ALSO WAS SO TRAGIC.
i also really liked marius’ character development which was cool bc i started out not liking him very much.

i really liked this and the whole concept - even though it is a bit darker than i usually like my fantasy - but i felt really thrown by the ending.
i was very much looking forward to the big reveal or to everything clicking in the place and making sense, but instead the ending kind of just... happened? and the resolution was referred to and talked about briefly but we never actually get to see what actually happened? so it left me feeling like i understood nothing about the book

IM FOAMING AT THE MOUTH
TOP READS OF 2024
the BAIT AND SWITCH at the end!! maybe i am stupid but i actually believed it for a moment. but ugh i loved that kind of the whole time i was like 'these people have weird fancy surnames' but then it was FOR A GOOD CAUSE

i came in to this book not expecting too much. it's a bit out of casey mcquiston's normal stomping grounds, so i wasn't sure if they would be able to pull it off. I SHOULD NOT HAVE DOUBTED.

i want to go to every location in this book. fuck the lonely planet i am packing the pairing and only the pairing on my europe holiday
