In Praise of Difficult Women: Life Lessons from 29 Heroines Who Dared to Break the Rules by Karen Karbo

Did not finish book. Stopped at 0%.
Interesting review of some amazing women but also biased, glossing over major controversial issues and skimming over important works. My whole book club couldn't finish the book. We overall found it to be a glib, and overly optimistic look at women who pushed against the grain.

The stories were interesting, but I didn't feel they allowed the women to be human...their faults or troubles were half-mentioned in a rush to include more profiles instead of depth of information.

Not horrible. Not one I'd recommend. A good place to find women you want to read about in-depth.

Suspensful and atmospheric magical realism in a twilight zone sorta way. Unease but intelligent and gothic instead of rushed and gory. Modern setting that easily slips between a semi-timeless vibe of something like Haunting of Hill House mixed with the nostalgia of something like Stranger Things.

Like Haunting of Hill House, the house itself is a character of sorts. You're right with the main character in that creeping sense that something is off. You root for her friends to be the people she sees and not the people you fear they might be underneath.

The book asks big questions about whether nostalgia is helpful or toxic. Makes you think about how media shapes us, the motivations of people who say they want the best for you, and what it takes to embrace your authentic self. Something i want to hand to a bunch of friends to get their reaction.

Loved this take on true crime podcasts and the presumed guilt of people involved in a murder. The town felt very small town with people quick to judge. Grandma was a great bit of levity in what could have otherwise been a too dark story. Listening to this definitely added an extra layer since the main story is broken up with "podcast" episodes about what is being uncovered.
