Hate to Fake It to You by Amanda Sellet
3.0
Book #94 read in 2024
I picked this up because of the incredibly cute cover and the promise of hilarity. Libby is a normal girl with an inspiring and fake online persona. When an influential media mogul, Hildy, decides she needs to meet "Lillibet" in person, Libby and her friends have to create a believable experience. The characters fell a little flat for me. I didn't connect with them and didn't really love any of them. This was a cautionary tale not to believe everything you see on social media. The goats were exceptionally fun, though!

The second in this series follows Porter Beck as he takes on an international mystery again. The book begins with a bang on the 4th of July and doesn't let up. There is a lot of violence, but the action doesn't stop. I will definitely read more of this series!

Ladykiller by Katherine Wood

Book #92 read in 2024
This cover and the setting of a Greek Island caught my eye. I feel like this story has been done before and better. It was an interesting read but not an edge-of-your-seat kind of suspense. The predictability of the situation made the ending a bit of a letdown. If you're interested in a quick escape read, this would be a good one.

Book #91 read in 2024
I really liked the beginning of this book, a Victorian House that holds secrets and the woman who finds solace there. But the house is bought and renovated taking away all the charm. When Jane returns, she meets the new owner, who has a son who sees the house's ghosts. Here is where the book takes a turn and becomes more of a history lesson than a novel. While it was interesting at times, at others, it was meandering and preachy, drawing us away from the charm of the initial story. Jane was not likable, but I liked her interaction with the paranormal.

The Burning by Linda Castillo
4.5
Book #90 read in 2024
I look forward to a new Kate Burkholder book every year. Once again, Linda Castillo transports us to Amish territory to the scene of a grizzly murder: an Amish man burned at the stake. Kate's brother is one of the suspects, and Kate is taken off the case, but she does not stop trying to find the answers. Kathleen McInerney is once again brilliant as the voice of this series. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe

Book #89 read in 2024
Margo is all alone in the world. Her mother is around but preoccupied with her new boyfriend. Her father is an ex-pro wrestler with addiction problems. So when Margo finds herself pregnant by her married college professor, she has to figure out how to live. When her roommates can't live with the baby anymore and move out, Margo turns to OnlyFans to make rent. What follows is a story of perseverance as Margo figures it all out. This started slow for me, but I loved watching Margo's character develop and grow as it progressed.

Ellie's Deaf boarding school is shut down, so she has to move home to attend public school. Her family wants her to be "normal" and won't accept that she needs accommodations to participate in their family discussions. The school pairs her up with a buddy to help her get around the school, and while she and Jackson become friends, he is dealing with a crisis of his own. I really loved the relationship between Ellie and Jackson. I was so frustrated for her when she was dealing with her family and was happy she found a community of friends to help her navigate her relationship with her parents. This was a great YA read!

Lenny Marks Gets Away With Murder by Kerryn Mayne
3.5
Book #87 read in 2024
The title of this book makes it seem like a mystery, but in reality, it's a journey of self-discovery and recovery. Lenny is reclusive and introverted. She likes control and has trouble with social situations. At first, I wanted to compare her to Molly in The Maid, but Lenny was just harder to like. Once there was some context as to why Lenny was the way she was, it became easy to fall in love with her character. Lenny couldn't remember her childhood for the longest time, and when she does, we are treated to a heartbreaking and emotional journey of healing. Annie Maynard does a great job as Lenny's voice! If you loved The Maid, this one is for you.

When Alice receives threatening messages every Wednesday, she must figure out why. Is it related to a story she's reported on, or is it something more personal? Alternating with Alice's story is the POV of her hired private investigator, whose character I loved. Finally, we get a glimpse into the mind of her stalker as his POV is also represented. This was a suspenseful and enjoyable read. There were a lot of red herrings before the stalker was revealed, and it was a great ending!

Lovers and Liars by Amanda Eyre Ward

Book #85 read in 2024
This was a quick read set over a weekend at a family wedding. It really is about the dynamics between the three sisters and their mother. As the weekend unfolds, the family tries to overcome the secrets and lies that have kept them apart over the years. While it is a family drama, it is also a quick read that is somewhat predictable but still enjoyable.
