I genuinely enjoyed this book 95% of the way but the ending quite literally ruined it for me. Watching Iris and Romans relationship develop both through letters and in person was so cute. I loved their story, and both characters alone are enjoyable. It could definitely be said that they

got married way to quick

but honestly, I wasn't upset with it considering they felt that bond.

In the very beginning you get a glimpse of Iris and Forests relationship, a very strong sibling bond and love. He goes to war, and you're also left with a hope that he has somehow survived. Iris love for him is so grand she ends up following him; in order to find him so you're connected to him through her.

Here's where it went to shit for me

the gas scene

the way it played out completely ruined forests character for me and honestly Iris as well. It was very intense in the moment which I was a fan of. However, if

Forest would not have ever seen Roman in the gas I could've understood or if at first, he was hesitant but eventually saved him because he saw how much it affected Iris, I would've absolutely loved it. There would be redemption in my eyes for him. But he ripped her away and left her husband to die completely unforgiving. I do not care if it was a risk for him, it ruined his character in my eyes.

Now outside of Forest I also think it had a negative impact on Iris character

After her brother who she has literally gone to war for completely betrays her, THERE IS NO CONFLICT. I was waiting for an eruption of anger, sadness ANYTHING and she's just like ooop I'm going to go back with forest because I promised hehe and from the narration we understand at one point she feels tension in the room but again SAYS NOTHING. This was so unrealistic and a huge slap in the face to the "love" she felt so deeply for Roman." I felt like their entire relationship was now not as meaningful.

I thought I was going to rate this a 5 but the ending was so horrible I couldn't. 3 for Roman because in the end

he used everything he had left to crawl to her, while she just was fine with her brother lol
