actual rating: 3.75

i had so much hype for this book and it turned out to be a disappointment. It just felt like the first book all over again apart from the chapters from five years ago.

Also, why repeat yourself constantly. Tyler Bruce this, Tyler Bruce that. Shut the hell up, nobody cares.

However if you do plan to read this then read the original trilogy first otherwise you’ll setting yourself to be spoilt.

CHARACTERS
I adored Selina in this book, especially her friendship with Ivy. I know many people were worried or annoyed that Sarah J Maas is writing this but I’m glad she did. I couldn’t think of anyone better. All the characters are amazing and written in depth. They are flawed but brilliant.

more to come.

“There was blood on the Council dais, blood on the steps, blood on the walls and the floor and the shattered remnants of the Mortal Sword.”

I absolutely loved Queen of Air and Darkness. I can't get enough of Cassandra Clare's books. All of them are phenomenal and get better and better with each book. I honestly can't begin to tell you which book trilogy or series I prefer. Cassandra Clare has created a world that I would love to be in.

Cassandra Clare gives us so much rep that is very respectively done. This is from sexuality, gender representation. Furthermore, can we just appreciate the fact that Cassandra gave us a main character on the Autism Spectrum. I feel like this is something that s hardly represented in Young Adult novels, especially fantasy ones. I need to get my hands on The Red Scrolls of Magic, The Last Hours and The Wicked Powers as soon as possible.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

THE CHARACTERS
EMMA: Probably one of my favorite female Shadowhunters. I love her bravery and empathy. It's gonna hurts knowing she isn't a main character in anymore books. She has developed so much in this trilogy, she is so badass but also caring and compassionate as well.
JULIAN: My precious smol bean. One of my favorites in the Shadowhunter universe. He is such an interesting character and different compared to Will and Jace. I loved the Dark Julian contrasted with actual Julian. It was painful to read but I loved it.
MARK: There is nothing I can say about Mark. I absolutely love him. That's all.
CRISTINA: *waiting for the hate comments to come.* I didn't like Cristina as much I thought I would. I like her friendship with Emma but she just didn't really stand out to me. My opinions of her might change if I were to reread this book trilogy but I can't really see that happening. She didn't have much of a character arc and only really seemed to be in this book for the love story.
KIERAN: I'm trash for dark haired fae princes, especially Kieran. Can we just talk about that moment when the fae people were remembering all kind things he did for them? He honestly breaks my heart.
KIT AND TY: Never gonna get enough of these characters. But like, can they hurry up and admit their feelings for each other? I can't handle the torture any longer. There was simply not enough scenes of this two. Kit's POV were some of my favorites, he is definitely a Herondale.

There are so many other characters that I could talk about but I would most likely be here all day.

“There is nothing simple about vengeance, and nothing pure”

One element I loved was the Alternate Universe. I never expected Cassandra Clare to do it but here we are. The whole concept was brilliant. I was sobbing when Sebastian Morganstern appeared. I know I shouldn't love his character as much as I should but I can't help it. Cassandra also broke my heart further when Thule Livvy and Thule Raphael appeared.

Two things that annoyed me was Annabel and Giant Julian and Emma. Firstly, I felt like Cassandra wasted this opportunity to have an amazing villain. Annabel died so easily, it didn't seem fair. Especially considering, she is the on the cover of the book and the title is completely her. Secondly, I just didn't like the fact Cassandra turned Julian and Emma into giants for a moment. I didn't see the actual point in it. Like, they don't even kill Zara and crush her whole existence. Huge disappointment. And how did the heavenly fire didn't damage anything expect their parabatai bond? I can't.

Okay, I want to talk about the whole Cristina-Kieran-Mark relationship. It just didn't work for me. I praise Cassandra for including this aspect into the book and all that. I just didn't enjoy it at all. It was nothing that wasn't necessary to the plot. I would much rather have Kieran and Mark together as a couple because they were hella cute and I was completely down for that.

Kit deserved better. I can't believe he parted with the Blackthorn family particularly Ty. They better reunite in The Wicked Powers stronger and in love. However, I did like that he went with Jem and Tessa. I love the characters from that universe so much, it breaks my heart when they make a cameo.
