I won’t be reading the rest of the series but it was a decent distraction for the evening.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 3%.
It read like bad screenwriting for dialogue the author thought I’d want to hear instead of actual dialogue. I made it 20 pages and just couldn’t imagine reading the rest

Felt like something I’d read before due to the whole “trial for hand in marriage” plot structure but then DAMN OK.

I feel like this was overhyped based on how much it came into my feed for booktok/insta. Interesting premise for a series, but the pace of the book was odd. Too long spent on some things
enemies to lovers
and not enough time developing the characters after a fundamental challenge/major plot point of conflict.
Also sorry but the jump to the future with little note that they have kids now?? Idk just not for me

As someone who’s struggled with OCD since childhood, this coming of age of a young 20 something necromancer plagued by “Shadow Voice” felt like the first time I got to read a genuine understanding of OCD. I came for the plot (give me a missing sibling and a game of wits any damn day) but fell in love with assurance Ophelia finds for herself.

Didn’t give the full 5 because it felt too quickly resolved at the end. Recommending to everyone. Excited for what comes next.

Fast paced and the age of the characters seems reallllyyyy at odds with behavior/sexual exploits. It’s not even about the red flag content - the pacing of the book felt rushed. Characters not well developed. I can’t even imagine reading anything more in this series.

On the plus side - no pregnancy trope so at least there’s that.

My brain has new folds. Insightful and research develops well throughout. This written for academia, some assumed knowledge on the part of the reader occurs. At times it feels like density for densities sake.
