House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas
1.0
this is really a 1.5 but obviously the stars don’t allow me to actually rate it how I’d like. honestly I was sad to have to give this book such a low rating because I’m a fan of throne of glass and have reread that series many times. tbh I went into this expecting it to suck and I was right.
the world-building was way too much all at once, it’s really confusing in the first few chapters, feels like information is being shoved down your throat without enough clarification. I didn’t even try to follow all the hierarchies in this world. the characters are super tropey and cliché: badass sexy girl who gets FORCED to spend time with badass no-emotions sexy boy and they end up in love!! who’da thought??? and I thought they said and did things in the middle and end of the book that were inconsistent with how their characters were framed in the beginning.
the writing was just not good. not original. seemed like she just... gave up? while writing this. I literally found typing mistakes. I read half the book in a permanent cringe because of how cliché things were. this book is marketed as an adult novel and it’s NOT. it’s YA with a hefty dose of profanity and sexual innuendo, which is not what makes an adult novel.
the only reason I give it a 1.5 and not a 1 is because the last 200 pages had a giant plot twist that I didn’t expect and then it was pretty fast paced and gripping after that. besides that though, you could predict the result of every relationship and the fate of some characters. reading this book was rough and I regret it.

Station Eleven and now this? This novel is absolutely beautiful. Emily Mandel is an artist. I will be acquiring and reading her other works as soon as possible.
