Unfortunately I found this story slow and boring. The characters didn't keep me interested enough to slog through. I'm glad other readers enjoyed this, but it wasn't for me.
This is definitely darker than I expected for a Greek Mythology retelling. There are trigger warnings in the beginning, but I didn't think there would be suicide ideation throughout the whole book. I understand why Alexis kept having those thoughts. She had a rough childhood and it gets worse for her. I found all the characters interesting. I am really intrigued by Achilles, Patro, Kharon, Augustus and Nyx. Nyx was so unhinged and delusional in the best way. I know a lot of shit is going to go down in the next book. I can't wait to see what happens even though the ending was abrupt.
My first 5 star read this year! I really loved this book.
The banter and chemistry between Carolina and Lalo was top notch. Carolina is a bad ass and holds her own throughout this story. Lalo is another lovable green flag MMC. I'm hoping that Hollywood turns this into a movie, if they produce it correctly.
Willa has to be one of the most clumsiest FMC's I have ever read in a series. I kept thinking she needed to be in bubble wrap the whole time. A lot of bless your heart moments with her too. It was a fun read. I'm looking forward to learning more about the five brothers and their gifts.
Reading this book made me realized how much of a shit spy I would have been. I can't hide my facial expressions and my husband informed me I talk in my sleep sometimes. So there's that. This retelling was bittersweet. I don't want to give anything away, but Fanli and Xishi deserved better. I will leave it at that.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

"You are all l've ever needed. Your strength. And your weakness."
"I will always come for you, Faraine. No matter how far you go, no matter what darkness you face. I will come. And I will stand beside you."
Vor has to be one of the nicest King's ever. He was one big walking giant green flag the whole time. I like to tell myself I was more enraptured than Faraine was with Vor. I liked most of the characters. The world building was really interesting. I enjoyed the crystal magic system throughout this series. I'm looking forward to reading the branch off series Warbride.
DNF on page 142. I'm definitely in the minority here giving this book a 1 star. Normally I love fake dating and friends to lovers tropes, but this wasn't it. Stella kind of drove me nuts. I also got annoyed with the constant internal monologues. The story did not hold my interests at all. I was telling my friend what I was reading and got the title of the book wrong. That's not a good sign to not even remember the proper title to the book l'm reading. Unfortunately this one wasn't for me.
