A very fun little read even if it took me forever to actually finish it
The Queen of the Cicadas by V. Castro

I think V. Castro has a lot of potential as a writer though I feel like this book could've used a bit tighter editing since it kind of goes everywhere in the last third of the book. However this was a very enjoyable read!

This really was barely a haunted house book, the prose was clunky and could've done with another round of editing, the ending was disappointingly anticlimactic, and the whole back half of the book felt insanely rushed compared to the beginning which dragged on forever.

In the Valley of the Sun by Andy Davidson

I'll admit there were some good parts to this book and it had an interesting premise but that's all overshadowed by the brother-sister incest, the literal actual war crimes, the racial slurs, and the vampiric blood breast feeding scene.

I accidentally read the sequel to this earlier this year and I have to say, getting all the pieces to the puzzle of the second book was satisfying but more than that, it's another expertly woven tapestry of world building and a carefully crafted plot.

I enjoyed this book a lot, I only wish the author was a LITTLE less weird about kids. I don't think we needed an in depth description of a kid who keeps pissing himself deciding to stick memory foam on his penis which he calls "the pissball". That seemed unnecessary.

This book has everything: misogyny, homophobia, racism, transphobia, breastfeeding a grown man, definitely getting kuru from eating human brains, murder by eel, the line "let's swap body fluids, bitch!".

Had some interesting things to say but the core concept is the dumbest thing ever and also why the fuck was it on some cold war era propaganda shit.

I devoured this little collection extremely quickly. There were a few stories that didn't interest me as much, but the ones that stuck out to me were fantastically writhing and twisted and desperate. Full of body horror in settings that feel like your worst anxiety dreams, this collection is fast paced and contains a versatile body of work.
