And I collapsed without knowing if the kids, those who’d managed to save themselves, would end up leading decent lives or would become the same old villains, condemned by the ignorance of their forebears to perish in the ruins of their history. I collapsed without knowing if individual decisions can make a difference but with the certainty that the impulses of the human heart are the only defense we have against the unnerving sound of the trumpets of the apocalypse.

this was okay... felt a bit like a saramago-inspired postapocalyptic piece with a barely cohesive story line. i found it difficult to connect with any character but i powered through to see where the book was going, nothing to write home about...

”It’s pretty here,” Dex said. “I wouldn’t have imagined I’d say that about a place like this, but –“
“Yes, it is,” Mosscap said, as if making a decision within itself. “It is. Dying things often are.”
Dex raised an eyebrow. “That’s a little macabre.”
“Do you think so?” said Mosscap with surprise. “Hmm. I disagree.” It absently touched a soft fern growing nearby, petting the fronds like fur. “I think there’s something beautiful about being lucky enough to witness a thing on its way out.“

a lovely book about finding (or not finding) your purpose, absolutely love the universe becky chambers brought us into. i did feel like something was missing from this read but maybe nothing is?
