Great start, very good centrepiece in the middle, TERRIBLE third act. Once again, this author proves very adept at atmosphere and detail and just awful at constructing a plot. Still, this features the only character in Goldammer‘s work I’ve found genuinely interesting - unfortunately we don’t go anywhere with him, either. Also, the female characters are odd somehow, it’s not outwardly sexist but it’s something.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 36%.
Far too wordy and maybe the most misogynistic book I’ve read in the last five years.

This is it!! This is the Jane Austen read I always wanted but never quite found in her other novels!
Loses .5 stars for the convoluted and frankly not that solid side plot about Mr Elliot, but otherwise quiet, aching, swoon-worthy romance and that letter. My God.

Is this the definitive book on life in the former gdr after 1990? It might be. Time is weird in this village, it stands still and pulls backwards and has left the village behind. The story is so trippy and so real and so out there and so down to earth. The people are so weird and yet they make so much sense, and everyone is bored and proud and wistful and indifferent and I want to give this book to everyone I know. Fantastic.
