Was this book heavy-handed and a little slow off the mark? Yes. Did I become obsessed with it at the end? Also yes. If you like an extremely victorious HEA, you’ll find it here.

Kingfisher’s character writing is unparalleled. A knitting paladin? Be still my heart.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m DNF-ing this book. I loved the other books in this series, and the hard right turn this took from the established world is making me feel like I’m not reading a book from the same series. The book also seems to have suffered from extreme lack of editing. Sentences like “the twins nodded to indicate they agreed” are something you learn not to write in high school creative writing classes. If it was just a one-off, whatever, but the amount of telling-not-showing that happens on every single page continuously yeeted me out of the story and into “who WROTE this?!” land.

I almost DNF’d this book in the beginning because it was nothing but boring world building, but once the story took off, I enjoyed it.

I loved this story. Incredibly silly fox-as-humans shenanigans, heart-tugging, evocative.
