The reviews for this debut are all over the place, but it was a solid hit for me. 

A couple of people have mentioned Haunting of Hill House vibes and I completely agree with that. Johnny Compton nailed that gothic feel and delivered a traditional haunted house story with a few new twists. 

The biggest complaint I’ve seen is about how many characters there are with chapters from their point of view. My recommendation is to listen to the audiobook. While I agree the points of view could have been trimmed down, it wasn’t a pain point. The narrator did such a great job of reading for each character and I was so engaged, I didn’t have any problem following along. 

I was impressed with this debut and look forward to reading more from the author.

Lighter on horror, at least until the very end, I think this story makes for an excellent introduction to Kingfisher’s style. For those readers who are already fans, it’s another one to love. Sam is the first character from this author that I can relate to personally and that was such a nice surprise. I love the humor throughout, it plays so well against the creepiness of the slow burn mystery. The use of vultures was so cool too. I’m not usually a fan of birds, but I have more respect for those scavengers of the skies. 

I love a retelling and I like some spice so a story with a strong female lead who’s comfortable with her own sexuality, makes a move to pull Peter Pan AND The Lost Boys…sign me up! 

This was a fun series and I’m so glad I read it. It wasn’t perfect, but there was a good balance of plot vs. smexy and I thought the characters were fantastic. I enjoyed this dark twist on such a classic tale and will definitely look for more like it.

There’s a lot to love about this book, particularly if you’re a fan of grief horror. It’s a slow burn, but at just over 200 pages it’s easily worth the build up. The author does a fantastic job of creating a dark, unsettling atmosphere.  There are moments that are genuinely creepy.  If you’re reading alone in the dark, expect to turn on a light after you feel goosebumps on your arm or a chill on your neck. 

There was one plot point early on that didn’t make sense to me and a couple of things that felt unfinished as the author left them, which is what kept Remains from being a full five stars, but I’m seriously impressed with this debut novel.
