but it also had some moments where i wanted to give some headslaps - especially Hook deserved some in some moments!- since most of those overreactions and underdoing or under questioning in situations made no senses for a character that Hook was supposed to be and how he reacted.
but overall the writing was pretty solid and the plot okay if a bit fast moving and almost inst-lovey between wendy and hook.
the characters were okay and how the developed was pretty good - hook being a bit of the odd one out in this because as someone that was introduced as basically the ruthless enforcer in a mafia kinda deal and more or less in place to take it over if the big boss bites it, being described as so intimidating and having an aura that demands respect and attention…. he behaved utterly irrational and unrealistic.
for example something happens and he questions/tortures people but never asks the right questions such as “describe the person” “tell me the name” and i get that that was part of the big build up BUT here me out here: the story could have been told similarly with minimal plot changes if Hook would have actually behaved as if he was good in what he was supposed tk be great and feared for.
and i don’t want to say i wanted more brutality- there is a good amount of that in here - but if you have a character that people fear just by hearing his name because he’s so brutally efficient in his job? maybe let him actually be good at it? would have made more sense to me.
but overall this was a good read. i really loved some of the writing the author did, the book in it’s entirety was quick but fun and entertaining more or less from start to finish.
i personally could have done with a few less sex scenes, look erotica is a think i don’t mind but also don’t need and while i knew it was coming doesn’t mean i loved reading another sex scenes when i just wanted the actual plot to keep going because hey i actually wanted to know where that was going instead of reading about how wet wendy was yet again. personal thing i guess, but that was slight skip reading comes in handy for me.
overall- if you are interested? go for it! it’s a good read and while i do wish hook would have been done a little better overall this was well done and one if those books that makes you keep turning the pages and keep going - so perfect for binging or a weekend read.
sadly this last book in this trilogy didn’t work for me.
and i will never know if that is because it took me to long to read this - i read the other ten books more than 6 years ago and should have continued on with this one sooner and not let so many years pass to finish this off- or if this last book really does lack and is a bit of a mess.
the writing was easy to read but the plot was messy in my opinion. i don’t know that was because all the characters came together or if this whole “whisper” stuff just wasn’t explained and developed enough for me to make sense.
for me the first in in this series was definitely the strongest book and the others took a steady slight down into okay but i wish they would be better.
this book wasn’t bad but it could have been good if everything would have been a bit better explained instead of focusing a little too much on the characters instead of trying to make the actual plot and the whole “whisper” stuff work.
i am happy i finished this off but i am sad it didn’t end well for me but with a disappointing read.
and i do sadly think that while the first book was fun there are better sci-fi books and series out there now that are a better time investment then this particular trilogy. i think it was very much a product of the time is was published in - which is fine we need books like that too and they had their moments and now there are other books that are done better. or i guess for readers that are new to this particular genre or subgenre might still get something out of it…
oh well.
overall it was an okay series that could have been great with a bit krone focus in plot instead of romance relationship focus.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
4.5
beautifully written. quiet and slowly tickling along - a story more about the characters themselves and what they are doing instead of an actual plot.
but i love the writing, the characters and how the entire little story and now this series is more focused on the sisters than the romantic love but it still has those elements as well.
it’s the type of story that is cozy without being cutesy or just fluffy because this story talks about harder topics.
a short story that takes the reader through the entire spectrum of emotions in the best ways. it works perfectly as a short story because it gives the story and but doesn’t take to long to get to the point.
i really enjoyed this and thinks it’s a wonderful story in itself and a fantastic addition to the first story -bookstore sisters.
