Evanovich seems to write very similar books - i have read her entire Plum series - and i did hope for a little less similarities in the over ridiculousness.
that being said it is an entertaining read and if you haven’t read too many other jokes by this author the humor and specific „twists“ will not be easily foreseeable.
overall it’s a good book if a bit too over the top and unrealistic in a few too many moments for not being magical realism or urban fantasy.
but if you want something quick and easy and entertaining that doesn’t need too much brain power? this is a good one!
the characters are overall likable and have a pretty good dynamic and the plot is overall well done and while some moments sack a bit it’s overall a good one.

this was a frantically paced and well written little story that mixed the supernatural with real events in a nice way.
i didn’t know anything about the story so i really enjoyed how it unraveled and was told.
yes the ending was predictable but that didn’t take anything away from this and honestly there ist just so much suspense and slight horror that can be build in under 30 pages!
highly recommend for a fast but eerie read!

i can see how this story could make an impact and be a fantastic read during a different time period -when it was written or around that time especially but even 100 years or so later - but today … if this is not one of the first books with a „gothic“ setting, it won’t have the wow moments or be a hugely atmospheric read because today there are better written books in this areas.
that being said and as already noted- this had its time and it would be a fantastic read to discuss with others i can imagine.
the story in itself is okay.
pretty typical for round that time period if a bit more women friendly then many other stories so that was nice.
but it still had the creepy greedy older guy lusting after a girl around the age of his own daughter and the hysterical women that are seemingly useless besides being catatonic or in hysterics - not my favorite characteristics portrayed a little too often on classics sadly.
overall i am happy i read and even reread this because it’s a good story overall and it is worth the read - even just to see where a writing style could have started out with!

Galatea by Madeline Miller
not only is that a pretty perfect way to end an authors note but also a perfect way to sum up this little story.
for me it’s a representation pf the horrors some women have to surprise in with men so obsessed with a woman’s purity, selflessness and virginity that the men should be locked up in psych wards and heavily medicated to keep the rest of society save.
the story is beautifully written a great mixture of whimsical and horror -which yes is a bit of a strange thing to say but fits the story and the myth too.
it’s a great way into the author as well mythical retelling of the more feminist or honestly just women point of view - since as the author also points out: in the original texts most women didn’t speak many didn’t even have names because why would they need those things?!
highly recommend this!

…the mark of a good source myth; it is water so wide it can reach across centuries.
