Not a deep read by any means, but something good for a road trip or beach day. The plot gets more and more predictable, the characters often fall into stereotypes in the way they think and speak to one another (largely Charlie, she’s oddly focused on being a Northern Liberal and college educated). A feel good ending and a nice enough set up to the next book that you feel complete, but ready to keep going if you truly enjoyed it.

Absolutely the most entertaining true crime book I’ve ever gotten my hands on. Cannot believe I waited so long to dive into this book when I’ve spend many afternoons walking the streets of Savannah, feeling the weight of past lives mixed into the humidity.

It’s beautifully written. An amazing, wonder-filled look at Beaufort years ago, the cultures that make up South Carolina’s coastal regions, and how destructive and formative hurricanes are to coastal life.

Based on writing alone I would give the book 5 stars. I was sucked in and couldn’t climb out.

However, I have never felt so much anger and pain at the end of a book as I have with this one. Nothing mattered, nothing changed, no one wins - but that’s life.

Confusing at times if you try to make more sense of it than should be made. A look into an ache for meaning, making the most of situations, and the darkness of war. Aloof and casual about things most people would not be.
