It's one of the most hyped books of booktok so I obviously bought it. And after 2 years of waiting on my shelf, I finally read it !

The beginning of the book is very gripping with the introduction of the characters then the meeting of the two principals and their relationship which develops. But the end had some lengths and it disappointed me a little. I really expected to cry but in the end I didn't even have tears in my eyes (although it was obviously sad). I think the writting has something to do with it. It's quite simple and sometimes the vocabulary really pissed me off.

It's still a good book, easy and quick to read. But it was, in my opinion, a bit too hyped.

To begin with, the book is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside, and that's really a positive point because personally it makes me want to read it even more!

The story is very gripping, we immediately dive into this strange universe and I never got bored at any time. All the elements are well thought out and well connected, and I find that very satisfying because when you discover certain things, you remember what happened before and everything makes sense !! The story is also image based. I found it super original and I liked it a lot, it completes the story and makes it more real and "credible".

The only negative point is that the chapters are quite long so I sometimes had to stop in the middle of some, and I don't like doing that at all because it cuts out the action and when I took back my reading I did not really know what was going on.

Either way, I can't wait to read the following books to learn more about the characters and see how they will evolve and what will happen ! On the other hand, I discovered that there are five other volumes and I really wonder what the author could have invented to make it so long (I admit that it discourages me a little that there have so many volumes but I still want to know the rest).

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. I expected more, without really knowing what.

I really liked the writing and the characters are well written even if I didn't particularly get attached to them. I really liked the friendship between Miles and Chip. On the other hand, the character of Alaska disappointed me a little, I expected to know more about her but she remains quite enigmatic (which also makes all the singularity of the character).

I'm putting a warning from here because what I'm about to say can potentially be a spoiler ⚠️ I found the book quite similar to All the bright places because of the chapters "...days before/ after" so it gave me a somewhat annoying deja vu and made the plot too predictable. ⚠️ (end of the warning)

I also found the ending a bit long and repetitive, but overall it's still a good read.

I am very happy to have found this graphic novel because I was able to really learn more about a period of history that I didn't know much about.

In this story, the author stages herself, following in the footsteps of her grandmother to learn more about her past and that of her community. She therefore finds herself in the 1940s (this present/past transfer brings a little bit of science fiction to the story which is quite pleasant), sent to a detention camp alongside other Japanese-American citizens (including her grandmother). Kiku will live there for more than a year, which allows us to get a vague idea of the daily life of these people who were unjustly and forcibly detained. The only small negative point that is that I would have liked to know more, but the book is still very interesting and quite light while dealing with an important subject. An ever topical subject : the story takes on the backdrop of Trump's anti-Muslim speeches, allowing this trip to the past to echo the present and alarm about the potential risk of a return to the past (by registering immigrants).

To end on a lighter note, the designs are really beautiful although quite minimalistic. There is also a bit of lesbian romance and even if it's absolutely not the main subject of the book, it's always nice to see representation !

The story itself is good, plus I love Greek mythology so what more could you ask for. But the writing style bothered me a bit (which makes sense since it's a more a middle-grade novel and I'm much older) and I admit that it kept me from completely hanging on to the book.

The characters are really endearing, even if Percy is a bit stupid (almost annoying sometimes), but he's funny and sassy so I forgive him :) I also love the dynamic between Percy and Annabeth, can't wait to see how it will evolve (even if I already know aproximately how it will end). And let's not forget Grover, I hope to see him again soon. I can't wait to see all three of them evolve and grow !
