Where the Dead Sit Talking by Brandon Hobson

dark emotional
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

This was a tough read. Hobson takes us inside the mind of a teenage boy who is in the foster system. He has experienced trauma, so we see his attempts to cope and to find himself outside of the trauma. It's thought-provoking.
Lots of TWs.

Fascinating. A little confusing on audio. Still incredibly good.

I appreciated the surreal way the author approaches internal grief. The main character is caring for a chronically ill husband and dealing with her father's ongoing illness and potential death.
Everything I've read by Melissa Broder forces me out of my cookie cutter reading, which I enjoy sometimes. This is no different.

I really enjoyed this! Set in the burbs of Atlanta. Magical realism & family dynamics. It was great! 10/10 would read Neil's novel about the Bombayan if he wrote it irl

This was nice, but maybe geared toward a younger audience - teenagers/young adults.

That being said, I still really enjoy reading work from Mrs. Obama! Mad respect.

This was such a sweet read. I am not often one for seasonal romance novels, but I think this one does a really good job of character development, both ways the main characters and with the supporting characters. I really loved learning about the main character's mother in the past and seeing how those threads came together in present time to weave these really brilliant relationships. Also, friends to family is one of my favorite life tropes and realities.

I was so young during Obama's first term as president. This was really insightful!

Coriolanus is a brainwashed, entitled, ruthless ass.

Reading this felt like... A bad hangover.
And the ending ... I'm sure there was a point, but it was lost on me.

I haven't read anything else by Emma Cline, but other r aders have recommended her previous work. I may give something else a try, but I don't recommend this one.
