Acts of Violet by Margarita Montimore
2.0
I really wanted to love this - in fact, I was pretty into it, ignoring the unexplained Russian cultural references and more for the intrigue of the story, but the ending was a big letdown. The premise is really interesting, but gosh the ending felt so anticlimactic after such a long drawn out build.
South to America: A Journey Below the Mason Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation by Imani Perry
4.5
Read this one so slowly as there is much to digest here.
Each section is a separate location which requires its own meditation and reflection. The whole is really wonderful and quite moving, perhaps especially so because I view myself as a Southerner.

Long Division by Kiese Laymon
3.5
Brilliant, but confusing.
Sentence structure and character development were so good. Loved the upside down backwards portion and how the ending made you want to start all over and catch what you missed the first time. I also really enjoyed reading something from a young Black male perspective. This is definitely unlike any book I have ever read.

Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks by Patrick Radden Keefe
4.0
I've thoroughly enjoyed 2 of PRK's previous books and will now add this one to the list. It's such an interesting grouping of crimes, rebels, and mysterious situations. Keefe does an incredible job carrying you along on a journey through the stories. His journalism is A+
Dispatches from the Gilded Age: A Few More Thoughts on Interesting People, Far-Flung Places, and the Joys of Southern Comforts by Julia Reed, Everett Bexley
5.0
Julia Reed was such an absolute delight. Her stories, international, national, southern, are full of wonderful anecdotes and lessons. This was a real treat.
Good Apple: Tales of a Southern Evangelical in New York by Elizabeth Passarella
2.0
I didn't agree with all of the authors religious (or political) views and I felt like the "southern" was missing throughout, but the stories of living in New York City were entertaining.
The Exile by Diana Gabaldon
4.0
I really enjoyed this perspective shift to Murtagh/Jamie in this retelling of the first third of Outlander. I also really enjoyed the details at the end from the author about the making of a graphic novel and creation of the characters -- a really interesting insight into collaboration!
Persist by Elizabeth Warren
4.5
I really enjoyed this. Sen. Warren tells some of her life experiences and experience running for senator and president. It was enlightening and inspiring to read.
