I know I said five stars, that’s mostly overall vibes. I struggle with the whiplash that was Pen and kind of a cop out to make her the bad guy after we established she was a good friend. I loved Scarlett’s and Lukas’ relationship. I do wish the spicy scenes went there though. Like we talked about the lists and we talked about tying her up but we just got praise kink? I understand why though, people are already saying they feel icky about the dynamic and actually tying her up might push them too far. But it’s okay to read content warnings and skip a book even if your favorite author wrote it. I don’t read nonfiction, you don’t need to read BDSM, especially if you know you won’t like it. 

Every time I read one set in worlds through the doors I always have a small hope that one of them will end with them getting to stay. 

This is truly a chosen family story. 

I wanted to like this more than I did. I think if you think you’ll enjoy this you probably will and if you think you’ll be on the fence you also probably will be. It’s not a bad book but I was mostly bored and wanting more in a lot of areas and less in even more areas. I won’t be reading the second book but I think just based on this one they could have been one book. The relationship is iffy, and both drawn out and rushed. I like a slow burn but there could have been more angst rather than one of the characters just having more information than the other.

Additionally once she found out she was upset for like five minutes and then the next day they were married?? 

I would have liked more from the brother and probably more time with them together before to see that relationship before we want to go find him in war. We got more about a sibling we ultimately don’t care about than we did for the one two people are risking their lives for.
