i still gave it 2.5 stars because I like the series and the characters as a general rule.
This wasn’t the one for me. I found the FMC to be so boring that it bordered on ridiculous. She had been shot 3 times, was apparently this Uber genius, and showed spine and intelligence, except when it came to actually important things. She’s submissive, but being submissive doesn’t mean a push over, which both her and the MMC mention several times, but she literally questions him, he says “I can’t tell you”, and she’s like “Fair enough”. She was betrayed (like the title says) several times, works it out herself, asks him about it, he gives no answers, and she’s like eh, I have to make him happy. The women in all the other books had spine, they stood up for themselves, even when they were more submissive.
The MMC made more sense to me and felt like he made strides, and changed and made decisions that fit his character. She was just horrible. He noted that she didn’t want punishment heard her, and when he felt she deserved one, saw her and changed his mind, he heard what she said. He was open with her about his needs, talked things through with her or gave reasons why he couldn’t. When he wouldn’t discuss though it’s her job to push back or bring it up again later, and she just didn’t.
The story line was interesting, I just didn’t feel like anything she did fit any situation. There were lots of missed opportunities between the MCs for learning and growth. Once again, the subplot was interesting of Torpedo Ink trying to stop the human trafficking, but it was such a small plot point actually, then it was rushed at the end like CF wanted to finish the book and realized she hadn’t done much. I have to wonder what level of editing this had. It felt sloppy.
Also one final small note, all the Torpedo characters were called by their legal names in this book for the most part and it was super confusing since they’re never really called that in other books.

Nothing happened in the book. 200 pages that could have been 4 chapters. Such a disappointment.
I can sum it up quickly.
Verena leaves the hidden kingdom. Dacre immediately regrets his choice. His father makes him go with him to hunt her. They’re running through the woods. They find each other. She doesn’t trust him. Then he stands up to his dad. She trusts him. More woods. Then ocean town. They fuck. They try to get on a ship. They’re betrayed. She’s uses her powers to save him. They’re mates. She gets taken back to the castle.
That’s it. That’s the whole book. There should have been more to move the story along. Absolutely nothing here moves the larger plot really. I mean a little bit, sure. But a whole book? I would call it more of a novella.
