The Blood Vier is set in your classic high fantasy setting of a medieval-esque era of horses, swords, and royalty. I found it presented with young adult Game of Thrones vibes, especially with how you get thrown into the world in the beginning with very little preamble. Conveniently, the female main character is also fairly ignorant of certain aspects, making it an easy transition for the reader to learn more about the world. Harrill weaves just enough action through the story to keep it from being slow while still focusing on the political intrigue and unrest that drives the plot. There are plenty of open-ended plots and backgrounds to be explored in the later sequels. There are definitely a lot of things left unsaid by certain characters that will come to light later, and the relationship between the male and female main characters has a lot of room to grow whether professionally or otherwise.

This audiobook version is also dual narrated and both narrators are pretty good at doing different voices for all the parts during their chapters.
