“Sometimes it was difficult to accept the terrible lengths people would go to for their beliefs, particularly when they fooled themselves into thinking they were acting in the Lord’s name or for the public’s good when they were truly reacting out of hatred and fear.”
AS DEATH DRAWS NEAR
As Death Draws Near by Anna Lee Huber is the 5th book in the Lady Darby series. Sebastian Gage and Kiera Darby have finally wed and are enjoying their honeymoon. However, the honeymoon is put on pause when they get a notice from Sebastian’s father, Lord Gage. On the orders of Wellington himself, they are to head to Ireland to investigate the death of a nun. The country is still being torn apart by religious animosity. Could the death of this nun be religiously motivated and also politically motivated? One thing is for sure—this case is wrought with danger from all angles.
I guess it is a relief that Kiera and Gage are finally wed but I do miss that tension that plagued them in the first books. They have amazing chemistry! However, their relationship is growing on a whole new level-now it is marriage and the possibility of starting a family. But they know they must continue with their investigative partnership. I love that Kiera and Gage are getting better at being more open and honest with each other especially as Kiera struggles with wanting to continue her portraits and investigate murders. But she worries that she is not going to be a good mother. This aspect can be so relatable to those who are becoming mothers.
I did enjoy the religious and political backdrop. The author did a terrific job at showing the political gains to be had by those in charge but also how that affects the people.
I LOVE this series! I hope it just keeps continuing on! Nothing is as it seems and keeps the readers guessing every single time! 5 out of 5 stars!

A Pressing Engagement by Anna Lee Huber is actually a novella. It takes place between books four and five. Kiera and Gage and FINALLY getting married!!! But, of course, every wedding day has its hiccups. Kiera’s first marriage was a difficult marriage, so she would rather pass on the festivities and jump straight into being called Sebastian Gage’s wife. While she does have some wedding jitters, she can’t wait to start building a life with him. However, the mysterious torq from a previous mystery finds its way into their possession. Neither Gage nor Kiera can let this mystery go unsolved.
Wedding jitters are a thing-even in the 1800s! I did love how Kiera needed a reminder that her sister also needs her at times but has a different way of showing it. Sisterly relationships are complex and can easily be filled with misunderstanding. I also love how Gage and Kiera are on the same page more often than not. While the beginning of their relationship was filled to the brim with misunderstanding, they have learned and listened to one another and have built a beautiful relationship!
This book can’t be read as a standalone in my opinion. While the author does a great job at bringing readers up to speed, it still makes all the difference to go back and read all the books. Overall, it is a delightful novella– 5 out of 5 stars!

“This whole time I thought I could convince you,” Rama said softly. “This whole time, I thought you were on my side. But it turns out you were deceiving me. Deceiving everyone. Everyone else was right about you, and I was a fool.”
KAIKEYI
Thank you, NetGalley, Redhook Books, and Vaishnavi Patel for the opportunity to read this book. It was released on April 26th, 2022.
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel is the story inspired by the ancient epic, The Ramayana. Instead of reading about Rama. This book focuses on Kaikeyi, the second wife of Dasharatha. Kaikeyi was raised in a palace but as a woman, she knew what her fate would be—to marry and bring forth sons. She becomes the second wife to Dasharatha and delivers a son named Bharata. Upon marrying him, he had sworn that any child she would have would be named heir to the throne. However, the first wife Kaushayla has a son named Rama. He is the leader that his father wants. Thus begins the story we know, but is Kaikeyi that easily manipulated, or is there another side?
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I loved studying Ramayana in college. It has had a huge impact on the world and particularly on Asian and Hindu cultures. I am a sucker for retellings, especially stories that twist the ones we are all familiar with, however, this one is a little more delicate. I applaud the author for tackling such an intricate story. Although, this story is the center of millions of people’s beliefs. I want to acknowledge Own Voices reviewers who mention why they did or did not like this book. It is their opinion that matters the most, as I am not of the Hindu religion.
While I like the idea to recreate some details into more feminist details, it really wasn’t. Ravana who is supposed to represent evil is kind of humanized? It didn’t work for me. The book was also very slow. Considering the topic, I assumed it would be a little more fast-paced. I did love the characters’ connections, specifically the relationships between Kaikeyi and her brother and also between her and the other wives. The Binding Plane aspect didn’t necessarily make an impact on me but I did not dislike it either. My favorite aspect was the depiction of Kaikeyi as a warrior Queen and her success in battle.
Overall, I am pretty neutral when it comes to this book, but it definitely makes me want to revisit the Ramayana. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

“Our fellow animals teach us lessons about the delights of sameness and difference. They immerse us in wonder. They lead us to humilty; they inspire us to reverence. They teach us the many facets of love.”
THE HAWK’S WAY
The Hawk’s Way by Sy Montgomery is a book I would have shared with my Dad. My Dad’s favorite bird was a hawk. He would get so excited whenever he would see one. In fact, after he passed, we found an index card that my Dad wrote some notes about some local hawks. He wrote about how many were flying together, their flight patterns, and which direction they were flying in. He admired them. Now, whenever I see one, he just feels near.
When I saw that Sy Montgomery wrote this book, I knew I needed to read it. She wrote one of my favorite nature books, The Soul of an Octopus. Sy Montgomery has a beautiful connection with animals of all kinds. When she studies an animal, she puts all of her passion into it. That is the same for hawks. While hawks are not animals that can be kept as pets. They are intelligent but much more instinctual. The author often refers to hawks as dinosaurs. They are birds of prey, also called raptors.
I loved learning about these birds. While this book is only 90 pages, it is short and sweet. It also made me a little sad because these creatures require large amounts of territory in order to survive. The area where my family lives are being developed at an alarming speed and I do fear that it won’t be long before hawks are a rarity in our area. I rate this selection 5 out of 5 stars.

“There are as many ways to make one as there are monsters.
But you must ask yourself: Who is the real monster? The creature being made, or the one creating it?”
THE CHILDREN ON THE HILL
Thank you, Jennifer McMahon, Gallery Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book! It was just released on April 26th, 2022.
Jennifer McMahon is a master when it comes to horror and that continues in The Children on the Hill. in 1978, Vi lives with her Gran and brother, Eric. Gran is an important psychiatrist at Hillside Inn. Vi and Eric have their own monster club and when Gran brings home Iris, they are so excited to add another member to their club. But Iris is a mystery. She doesn’t remember her past and she bears some horrible scars. Vi is determined to find answers for her and those answers can only be found at the Hillside Inn. In 2019, Lizzy has a famous monster blog and podcast. After the events at Hillside Inn, she is determined to put her past behind her but there is one monster she must find in order to do that…
“But I thought fear was a good thing–the day I stopped being afraid and on guard was the day I let my defenses down. Fear kept me on my toes.”
THE CHILDREN ON THE HILL
This book needs to be added to your October TBR stat! Jennifer McMahon is the Queen of Horror. The eerie aesthetic is perfect throughout this book. It has monsters, unethical experimentation, and a historical asylum. It draws inspiration from Frankenstein and asks the question who are the real monsters?
These characters are magnificent and have so much depth. This book dives into how our minds react to trauma. What is really disturbing is the secret experiments that are conducted in the book. The goal is to erase memories to get rid of any “undesirable” behaviors in order to make sure only beneficial people remain in our society. It goes to show the true monsters are the ones who are trying to create monsters.
The twist in the book is fantastic and I am not going to lie when I say I wanted to watch a Monster Hunter episode after this book. It felt like Scooby-Doo…but for adults. I loved the dual timelines. Everything flowed perfectly! Overall, another win from Jennifer McMahon. 5 out of 5 stars!

“Is this a simple domestic murder that we can deal with today, or is there more to it? I expect you will say it isn’t going to be that simple, for it so rarely is…”
A TASTE FOR KILLING
Thank you, NetGalley, Sarah Harkswood, and Alison & Busby Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. It was just released yesterday, May 12th, 2022.
A Taste For Killing by Sarah Harkswood is a medieval mystery. The year is 1145 and Godfrey Bowyer and his wife Blanche have a difficult relationship. One night, voices are raised and tensions are high. So high, in fact, that pots are smashed against the wall. But that isn’t the highlight of the night. Both Godfrey and Blanche become seriously ill. It comes on suddenly and the healer can’t save Godrey. However, Blanche survives. A poisoning case should be a quick investigation. Hugh Bradecote and Sarjeant Catchpoll are the Sheriff’s men and are confident it will be over quickly. But this case seems to be more complex than they originally hoped…
I have been on a historical mystery kick as of late. It just seems to be a genre that I cannot get enough of, so I was thrilled to get this medieval mystery ARC. This should have been intriguing. The year is 1145 and that means England is in turmoil. They are currently in the middle of a Civil War. Stephen is King, but Empress Matilda is trying to assume the throne. There should be both religious and political background to this story. But alas…this tale is limited.
I understand that this isn’t going to be CSI or Law and Order but this book is mostly dialogue. It is just talking the entire time. And on top of that, it is all repetitive. The characters are very one-dimensional. I knew their names and a little bit about their background, but that is it. There is no character development in the slightest. And not only that but the ending was so predictable. So unfortunately this book was not a win for me. I rate this book 1 star.

Thank you, NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and Erin Litteken for the opportunity to read this book. It releases on May 16th, 2022! And a portion of the proceeds will be donated to DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
The Memory Keeper of Kyiv by Erin Litteken is a deeply personal and emotional novel about generational trauma. The book introduces Cassie in 2004. She is in a deep depression. Her husband was killed in a car accident and her daughter still bears the scars from it as well. Her mother insists that she needs to move on with her life and has her move in with her grandmother, Bobby. Bobby never talked about her past, but now that she is getting older, the memories are resurfacing. In flashbacks to 1929, Katya lives in Ukraine with her family. Stalin begins the collectivization in Ukraine. At first, they are able to resist joining the activists, but then there is the rise of starvation and killing. Katya must do everything in her power to survive and ensure the survival of her family.
Trigger Warnings: death, loss, child death, parent death, starvation, war, cannibalism, and more
While this book does not take place in the present day, it is heartbreaking that we are witnessing history repeat itself with Russia invading Ukraine. I was actually not familiar with The Holodomor and the atrocities that were committed. Let me tell you now, it is horrifying. It is also called the Terror Famine and millions of Ukrainians were killed. What I really appreciated about this book is how this book is deeply personal to the author. Her grandmother also endured these terrifying events. In the book, Bobby keeps her past a secret but still bears the scars. When her daughter and Cassie finally discover her past and the trauma she endured, that pain is also inflicted on them and the readers will see the effects of generational trauma.
I actually enjoyed the two different timelines. Cassie is enveloped in depression and is having difficulty working through her grief. However, it is learning about Bobby’s life that is able to help her work through it. Throughout Cassie’s perspective, she gets to learn more about who she is and where she comes from and who her people are, and what they have endured. The love story aspect did feel a little bit forced at first but then I noticed that there needed to be a little lightness in this very heavy story. But I cannot stress enough how important this story is. There are so many people who have had their stories covered up and ignored. Telling these stories will bring awareness to what is currently happening today. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

“There’s a scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.”
A STUDY IN DEATH
A Study in Death by Anna Lee Huber is the fourth book in the Lady Darby Mystery Series. Finally! Gage and Kiera are engaged! The wedding is being planned and Kiera just wants to skip all the plans and celebrations and go straight to being Gage’s wife. But her sister is nearing her confinement and needs something to occupy her in the last weeks until the birth of her child. Kiera is staying busy with her painting commissions and one of her commissions is painting a portrait for the kind Lady Drummond. One day, Kiera arrives for her appointment and finds Lady Drummond convulsing on the floor. Kiera does everything she can to revive her but Lady Drummond dies. Her death is ruled by natural causes, but Kiera is suspicious. She will not stop until she gets justice for Lady Drummond.
It’s always the husband…or is it? One thing that I love about Anna Lee Huber is that there is always complexity to the mysteries. There are times when all of the evidence points to one person but from time to time, that person is innocent. I love watching Kiera learn to trust her gut and also the evidence. Gage always takes Kiera’s insight and gives her the support she needs to voice her opinion in a male-dominated world.
The chemistry is still between Kiera and Gage although now it is more developed. They are both finding ways to open up to each other about the past. They are breaking down the walls that the trauma from their past had built. Overall, I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!

“He sighed. The sounds conveyed no impatience, only a deep wistfulness. “You are telling e that before you can be sure of your affections, you must be sure of yourself…”
ART OF THEFT
The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas is book four in the Lady Sherlock series. In this installment, Mrs. Watson is visited by a former lover who has secrets kept on the back of a piece of art. These secrets are not only a matter of life and death but also an entire country may be at stake. While this team has only solved murders, stealing a piece of art in high security may be their most challenging and dangerous case yet. Charlotte Holmes, her sister Livia, Mr. Marbleton, Lord Ingram, and Mrs. Watson are on the mission of a lifetime.
My hopes were so high after the last book! It kept me guessing and the things I didn’t appreciate about the first two books seemed to dissipate. Well…it is back. There is a constant discussion about Charlotte’s number of chins and how much she eats. In this book, she is now becoming more self-critical–probably from Mrs. Watson constantly reminding her of her eating habits. So in this book, we get so many descriptions of the food that she tries to resist. There are descriptions of how much butter she is putting on her toast and I love food, so this wouldn’t normally bother me but the descriptions are dripping with negative connations. She even begins to start exercising to punish her body for over-eating. I am a runner and have a daily yoga practice. There is a difference to better yourself for health reasons and punishing your body. This can be uncomfortable for those who have eating disorders. It isn’t just mentioned, it is brought up constantly and to be quite honest it ruins the story.
I did love learning more about Mrs. Watson’s history. It gave her more depth and it called the other characters to learn acceptance and that love is love.
I will be honest, I do prefer murder mysteries to art theft. This one is a lot slower in pace. But I will continue on, especially with that mouth-dropping ending! I have to know what happens with the characters. I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars.
