This was ok. When I first started it I thought I was going to love it, there was some truly creepy stuff towards the beginning, but once you hit the one really scary moment (
narrator waking up to see the effigy staring in the window
) nothing much builds after that. Things happen, but for me nothing was as unsettling as that moment, so everything else is just sort of...OK. And there's no why or any kind of explanation at the end, beyond
the holler people needed a new breed mare and Anna didn't want to do it anymore
. And I get that's supposed to maybe make it more unsettling, and I'm usually ok with those kinds of endings, but I think because there was so little happening with the rest of the story I wanted more explanation. 

So yeah, I enjoyed it, clearly didn't love it and wouldn't call it a must read, but it was worth a try if you want something mildly scary.
