Who's That Scratching at My Door?: A Peekaboo Riddle Book by Amanda Leslie
4.0
This is a great guessing book and the kids get to make the animal noises with you. I used this for my 12-24 months storytime so they weren't really able to guess since they can't talk yet, but by asking them to guess I helped work on their narrative skills. Would be fun with older kids who could guess which animal was knocking at the door.
Harry by the Sea by Gene Zion
5.0
This is my favorite book in the Harry the Dirty Dog series. Harry gets separated from his family at the beach and after being swept up in a wave comes out of the ocean covered in seaweed and looking like a sea monster, which leads to lots of confusion and panic on the beach.
The only problem with reading this to the class that came to the library to visit was most of the kids had read it already.

The Black Rabbit by Philippa Leathers
5.0
This new book is one of my favorites. It is about a little rabbit who is terrified of the giant black rabbit that seems to be following him around everywhere. The black rabbit, from the start, is obviously just the little rabbits shadow, and if the kids are old enough to realize this the story is really funny.
Blister by Susan Richards Shreve
3.0
Blister, formally known as Alyssa Reed, decides to take a new stronger identity after her baby sister is born stillborn and her father moves to a new apartment and gets a new girlfriend. At school she lies about her life in an attempt to fit in. At home she deals with her depressed mother and her emotions about her father's new life.
One of my regular patrons recommended this book to me. She's 9 and I really wondered as I was reading this how much of the deeper meaning of the book she got. The main character of the story is 10, and she doesn't fully understand what's going on around her, only that it is interrupting the life she wishes she had. For instance, she believes that by stealing the clothes of her father's new girlfriend she can break them up and get her family back together.
This was a really depressing read, but it all about bouncing back and tackling all those hard situations that life throws at you. In the end, Blister does not make the cheerleading squad at her new school because, as one of her classmates says, it's a popularity contest. The book ends with Blister stating that it doesn't matter that much because she is elastic and will bounce back from this sitation, as she has bounced back from situations before.
I would recommend this for 7th and 8th graders who can fully grasp the severity of what's going on.

Big Kicks by Bob Kolar
4.0
Cute book about a bear who fills in to help out a soccer team. The rest of the team thinks that he will be good at soccer because he is big. It's a cute friendship book.
Bedtime for Monsters by Ed Vere
4.0
This was a cute bedtime book. The author makes you think, through a series of questions, that the monster in the story is out to eat the reader, but really all he wants is a goodnight kiss. It's perfect for a just before bed story.
After Eli by Rebecca Rupp
5.0
After Eli is the story of a teenager named Danny whos older brother Eli is killed in Iraq. The book revolves around Danny attempting to cope with his brothers death and the friendships he makes over a summer that help him to do this. It is a very moving book of friendship, family and strength. It is one of the most moving books I've read in a while. Simple yet powerful.
Going to Mecca by Na'ima B. Robert
3.0
A fairly good introduction the pilgrimage with a glossary in the back to give more information.
All Through My Town by Jean Reidy
3.0
A pretty basic sounds around town book. Doesn't provide opportunity for the listener/audience to make the sounds with the reader. Because of this I would skip it for storytime.
