Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole
4.0
[Selected for the Owings Mills Library staff recommendations display, December 2014]
I liked the book; I enjoyed the aspect of storytelling through letters. Her descriptions on occasion didn't seem to fit the time period of the characters, but the storytelling was very compelling and enjoyable.

My Red Balloon by Eve Bunting
5.0
This Young Readers book shares the story of a military child’s excitement and anxiousness as he prepares for his Navy father’s homecoming. Though things do not happen exactly as the boy plans, the joy of seeing his father again is untarnished.
Night Catch by Brenda Ehrmantraut, Vicki Wehrman
5.0
This beautiful picture book shares a deploying father’s attempt to ease his son’s sadness at his departure by suggesting they can play a new kind of catch each day with the North Star instead of a baseball. In addition to the theme of the military family facing deployment, there is a great science lesson in the book as well, describing how one part of the world is in darkness when the other is in daylight.
Nugget on the Flight Deck by Patricia Newman
This very cute book leads a young man on a tour of an aircraft carrier, told in the style of an aviator. The author does a fantastic job of providing information about the jargon that a Naval aviator would use. The colored-pencil illustrations are simple, but show the important details beautifully. The book includes additional facts and recommended further reading for those interested in more information about aircraft carriers and Naval planes.
You're a Grand Old Flag by Warren Kimble, George M. Cohan
5.0
This picture book is a love-letter to Americana, with the lyrics to Mr. Cohan’s “You’re a Grand Old Flag” accompanied by folk-art patriotic images painted on distressed wood. The book includes interesting facts about the song and flag, and the musical notation for the song.
The Impossible Patriotism Project by Ard Hoyt, Linda Skeers
5.0
This Young Readers book tells the sweet story of a military child whose father is deployed and can’t come to Parents’ Night, where the class is presenting projects representing the concept of Patriotism. The story ends satisfactorily, and the last illustration before the endpapers put a lump in my throat.
Black Widow, Vol. 1: The Finely Woven Thread by Nathan Edmondson
4.0
I subscribed to this title partly because it features a female protagonist, and partly because I felt like the Avengers movie was an inadequate introduction to Natalia Romanova.
I love the stories. I love the art. I think I'd need to go digging into other TPB series to get a full education in the character's origin, but I really enjoy the present day setting and Black Widow's exploits when she's not with the Avengers.

Captain Marvel, Volume 1: In Pursuit of Flight by Kelly Sue DeConnick

Captain Marvel is the superhero Marvel needs right now. She's a woman, she makes the hard decisions, and she kicks a lot of butt. Ms. DeConnick weaves together a great story, and the art is great.
(And Carol is getting her own movie in 2018!!)

She-Hulk, Volume 1: Law and Disorder by Charles Soule

I subscribe to this title, and am totally enamored of this character - a woman who has as much presence in her human form as she does in her super-powers. A woman balancing a career, a personal life, and saving the world? I am all in.
