The second novel of Alvarez and I’m still not a fan. Alma as a character doesn’t seem to have her own sense of self outside of writing and figuring out her father’s secrets. Filomena was the star of the novel and her stories kept me reading, but it wasn’t enough to save the book.

The triplets writing their own version of events was perfect and told the story seamlessly.

She’s so annoying because as an educated woman, just LEAVE. John had to force her out. She acknowledged she was a single mom in a marriage yet stays. The writing was really well done but it may be a Gen Z perspective that it’s better to be single than being destroyed in a relationship.

The story follows an unreliable narrator with dreams of Broadway but doesn’t even have the talent for regional theater. Jessamyn is on a mission of self determination that leads to self destruction. Someone dies in the end! The end of the novel was abrupt which I didn’t appreciate so the story doesn’t wrap up nicely. Thank you ECW Press for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own!

An unreliable, mentally ill narrator who can’t help her children. It doesn’t get interesting until the end but that’s too late to save the story.
