It was a story of… small town life perhaps. Classmates come and go. Everyone dies eventually. There isn’t a plot, just observation of classmates as people age.

This book reads like “The Extinction of Irena Rey” by Jennifer Croft; I’m guessing Polish translations read the same. I didn’t see the murderer’s identity coming which was a surprise in the last chapter.

I didn’t think I was going to like this novel but it covered difficult themes considering most of the characters are 12-13.

So many jaw dropping moments in this novel. “The Maidens” is more refined and clearer than Michaelides first novel. If it was a little shorter/faster, this book would be 5 stars.

Low 3 because the writing was fine but the plot was boring.

It’s a long book but full of love. Shiva unpacks her family history in Poland while studying Jewish folklore. It takes a bit of reading to understand when she’s alternating between her POV and her mother’s.
