Wow, this book was incredible! Had me hooked from the first page and kept me up late at night. The plot was well thought out with complex characters and a true enemies-to-lovers trope. The twists had me shook and yelling at my kindle at 1am, How dare you do that to Josie, Hayley when I catch you... . I thought this book did a good job at exploring the complex relationships we have with our families and the realities of living as a black person in America while also having a very intriguing storyline and relationship between the two main characters. My one critique would be there was a little too much telling instead of showing but I think this will improve as the author gains more trust in themselves to weave ideas in more subtly and their readers to pick up on hinted-at details.
Overall a fantastic debut novel that I would recommend to anyone wanting to read a YA fantasy with vampires, mystery and very minimal spice.

Sabaa Tahir expect an invoice for my therapy bill because this series destroyed all sense of happiness I had left.
only docking 0.25 of a star for saying 'Would that I' a million times (although she did thank Hozier at the end of the book so I definitely see where she got it from)

one of the most emotionally heavy books I've every read. I don't think the characters (or I) had one moment of peace the entire book and everything that could go wrong went wrong.
On a lighter note, Keris has a very successful career in PR if she ever retires from being a Menace

omg I don't know why it took me so long to read this book!
Call-me-Grant. yuck, YUCK. eww, he makes my skin crawl. Especially the last mention of him watching the high-school hockey game on tv, uugghhh.
I think what I loved about it the most was how real it felt. The characters are very realistic and reacted to situations in ways that you would expect from teenagers. They were written in a way that if the author said 'surprise, these character are based on real people', I would not be shocked. And I think this makes the events of the book so much more shocking and impactful.
The amount of times my jaw dropped is insane, if I wasn't on public transport the book would have been thrown.
