I'm writing this review even though I feel like I can't put a full sentence together to describe what I'm feeling after this trilogy. While I read this with a rain cloud hovering over my head, it has finally lifted, I'm out of the forest (for Caleb), and I see the light once more.
THIS.DAMN.SERIES.
Caleb Drake makes you wonder why such bad and twisted things happen to good people. The poor guy is a real-life Romeo who did make mistakes, but his intentions were always righteous, pure, and well known. Life just didn't work for him the way he planned. As his existence progresses, he just keeps getting dealt the worst hands. He honestly makes you see why some people snap and run away, start over surrounded by strangers, or decide life isn't worth living anymore. I could do nothing but feel protective of this lovely man who everyone found so disposable and just watch the shit hit the fan... Over and over and over.
Leah, you managed to make me come full circle and despise you all over again... Bravo.
Olivia, you poor, conflicted woman. You struggled and fought your feelings for over a decade, and you knew you'd always find yourself entwined with Caleb in some way, whenever you fought it, I hated you, but I understood why you did what you did.
While this series utterly traumatized me, I ultimately loved it so much more than other series I've read because I could see my own flaws in the characters (I'm a total Olivia and love to keep people at arm's length at all times), and also because it was so REAL. It's refreshing to read about a couple who loves each other unconditionally, make their massive mistakes (both together and apart), and can still grow and find their way back to each other to build a life together. They're the ones who truly make it through the "better and worse" and can do it without a piece of paper or rings, or even a baby to prove it. I know their original plan included a family, and marriage, but in it's own off-kilter way... The way they did things seems so much better. It's a romance gone wrong, or as I like to call them, a real life fairy tale.
