Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

2.75

2.75 stars.

i don’t know what it was about this book that just didn’t captivate me. i was bored throughout a lot of it, i don’t care about any of the characters, nothing feels like there’s any real depth to it at all. it was a mind numbing read i guess

i’m going to say that if this book was written for more mature audiences i would’ve enjoyed it more. more sexual tension, the stakes feeling more real and intense, the world building being evident and atmospheric, the plot more detailed. this just felt very bland and YA. not necessarily a bad thing just not what i wanted

to summarise so i don’t forget:
alosa, daughter of the pirate king, is sent on a mission to board the nightfarer and find a missing piece of a map that 3 pirate lords have (1 being her dad). she catches feelings for riden, who is the first mate, while she searches the ship every night by sneaking out of her cell for the map. she can’t find it for ages, makes lots of mistakes, her siren side is revealed she ends up finding the map piece in the eye of the siren figure on the ship, then suddenly gets captured by the 3rd pirate lord who tries to figure out how her powers work. turns out the 3rd pirate lord is actually theris who was never her dads man but really a spy. blah blah, riden helps her escape by spitting sea water in her face after getting shot, they stumble into the ocean where she finds the nightfarer, saves him, then when her ship arrives she defeats everyone and claims some men for her own crew. riden gets saved on her ship, her dad wants the last piece of the map

overall, book was so mid and i’m hoping i won’t fall back into a slump after this. i will still read the sequel only because i own it already and don’t want to waste it.
