Tomboy Survival Guide by Ivan Coyote

4.0

“I am not trapped in the wrong body; I am trapped in a world that makes very little space for bodies like mine.”

I expected more “survival tips” and thoughts on being a tomboy, not so much the author’s memories of their life, but if it weren’t for this expectation, I’d rate this book higher, so I’ll do just that.
I’m more used to seeing much younger trans masc people and it was surprising but nice and even kind of educational to learn about an older one. This book (and I’m sure other books by Ivan Coyote are too, but I haven’t yet gotten to reading them) is good proof that there have always been people that feel gender neutral and that this isn’t just a new thing (although it is more popular now and unfortunately even overused).
Sometimes this book made me stop and think, sometimes it just showed, in my view, random memories of growing up and living life as a masc person or memories that weren’t even related to gender. Sometimes I was unable to stop reading but sometimes I even wished it would end sooner.
I was happy about the quotes and stories that gave me a feeling of being understood and that assured me that there are in fact people that think in a very similar way as I do and that know how to formulate those thoughts better than I can yet.
