Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll

4.0

When I think about the most unique books I've read this year, Bright Young Women comes quickly to mind.  Dubbed by many as a thriller, I must say that I disagree.  This book goes deeper.  And not only does it go deeper, but it also had a kick-a$$ vibe that I just could not get enough of. Yes, it was a fictionalized retelling of Ted Bundy's final murder spree, but it's told in such a way that it doesn't cast the reader's attention on "him," but rather the victims and survivors instead. In fact, the author makes a point of not using his name in this book for that very reason. Instead, she refers to him as The Defendant. ⁣

Told mostly from the point of view of Pamela, survivor and president of the sorority he targeted, this book shines a light on the experiences and viewpoints of the victims. I loved the little cutting remarks made in regards "him" in this retelling.  I did struggle with the opening scenes because of how intense and graphic it was, but I also believe it was essential here.  This book had me fired up as I read it, feeling all the emotions on behalf of all these women...especially heartbreak for what they endured and anger for how it was handled and obviously at The Defendant himself.  This is one of those reads that will stay with you long after closing the final pages.⁣
