American Pastoral by Philip Roth
4.0
This was good. Not my normal choice of fiction, but good. This chronicles the fall and deconstruction of a Jewish American family. It deconstructs and examines many aspects of "The American Dream", piece by piece. There was some commentary that almost feels like it might be the author speaking through the characters, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. After all, authors write about murderers but most of them haven't murdered people. We deal with the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war. Heavy stuff. I don't think I would recommend this book to most of my friends, because we tend to want lighter fare, or fare that doesn't hit so close to home.
