Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

5.0

"Being secure in your masculinity isn’t the same as being straight."

Here's the thing, I've been deliberately avoiding this book ever since it was hyped. And it's only after 2 years that I realized I was avoiding it because of my deeply internalized homophobic views, that were instilled in me unconsciously due to predetermined standards that I never questioned since I was a kid. I tell myself that I'm open-minded but deep down I just didn't care 'cause it's not happening around my circle. Yes, I was horrible back then ahahhaha but I grew older and I met new people and read new books and saw new perspectives.

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a true coming of age book and I just have to thank the author for materializing this one. I felt giddy and awesome reading this, I love Simon's unique voice, all the witty banter and hilarious references he throws, the amazing flow of dialogues with his friends, and ofc let's not forget Blue! I just can't help but burst into laughter or be so giddy with every email they exchange. They are so funny and endearingly honest. I LOVE IT.

Simon was pretty relatable and 4 chapters down I'm already attached with his inner circle of friends and his family! It's really a bonus that Simon has a stable family background, one that's actually really weird but nevertheless a family that accepts him. There are so many amazing portrayals in this book and it's just heartwarming to have people like this w/ you in life.
“I’m tired of coming out. All I ever do is come out. I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways. […] And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again.”

This was probably one of the best YA Coming of Age book that I've read ever since [b:Ramona Blue|31449227|Ramona Blue|Julie Murphy|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1496274486s/31449227.jpg|44080311] AND THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING.This book is not just about coming out, it's about identity, the relationships we have in life, and how we should all treasure this.
“...people really are like houses with vast rooms and tiny windows. And maybe it’s a good thing, the way we never stop surprising each other."
