Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer

5.0

Eating Animals have opened my eyes to many truths about the industry as well as helped me reckon with that I seem to be morally right and wrong. At first glance, this book seems to be all about getting people to stop eating meat but that is just one point the author is making. He speaks about why meat is so hard to give up for people and why vegetarianism and veganism so widely debated, all experiences I’ve been through since I’ve decided to start my transition to stop eating meat. It has helped me rationalise my values and ideas when it comes to this topic and solidify my own argument for not eating meat.

Throughout all this though, he writes about farms that do treat their animals well and farms animals in a sustainable and ethical way. Something he supports. Which begs the question, is unsustainability in farmed animals a moral question or an environmental question? To me, and to Foer it seems like, is more of a moral question than an environmental one.

There’s a lot more to talk about but the thing that impresses me the most in this book is the well rounded reporting with interviews and perspectives from farmers and actual statistics from the industry that makes it less of a ‘I’m telling you what to do and you should do it because...’ and more of a ‘I’m asking you these questions and telling you these information so you can decide for yourself’.
