Mexican Gothic is a wonderful gothic horror novel. From the beginning, it drops the reader into that just-out-of-time feeling. The setting of the High Place only adds to the ever-present edge of dread. I also spent most of the book screaming "They've got to be vampires, right?" only to have that pay off in a wonderful and unexpected way.
