Arguing with Zombies: Economics, Politics, and the Fight for a Better Future by Paul Krugman

A zombie is an idea that has been effectively proven dead by evidence but still lives on and destroys people’s brains (think trickle-down economics). Nobel winning economist Krugman has been writing editorials for NYT for the past 20 years and this book is a collection of those focusing on the major policies of this millenium. The first 2/3rds focuses on policies like social security, Obamacare, Trump’s tax cuts, income inequality, and trade wars. The latter 3rd gets more into social economics, the state of the Republican party, and finishes off with an opinion on crypto. Mostly, this is a lambasting of Republican policy, often tracing its roots back to Reagan. With the exception of 2-3 articles, these are meant for the general public, so if you don’t know any economics you will still follow and probably learn a lot. Conservatives won’t read it because it calls them liars, economically stupid, and corrupt, plus they don’t believe in science or evidence. Liberals will either love it because it “exposes” how awful Republican policy is, or it will make them very angry because the GOP is getting away with that policy. Even though there is a lot to learn from this book, it is divisive and purposefully so. If you really want solid analysis of policy over the last 20 years, this is a great start. Also good if you love Republican-bashing.
