Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
3.0
(Listened to audio book)
I read Kindred in the spirit of Black History Month. I had been meaning to read it for a while. I have read Butler's PatternMaster and Earthseed series and enjoyed them.
Kindred is about a black woman (Dana) from the 1970s who is transported back in time to early the 19th century in the American south where slavery was legal. The book gives a good sense of how terrifying it could be for black woman during that period and how precarious her situation would feel despite Dana's advantages compared to other black women of that period.
I didn't find the narration of the audio book to be great, and I wasn't gripped. So could have given 3 stars. Nevertheless, I think that this is a great example of how science fiction/fantasy can be used to shine new lights and provide new perspectives.
