This dark fantasy novel was a lot of fun. It starts as a sort of medieval fantasy (which I'm not a huge fan, to be honest), but then turns into a gothic horror (which I am a fan of!). Jelena takes well-known fantasy characters, like princes, knights, noble ladies, and such, and puts them in a haunted castle, where they have to survive. It's a great combination, honestly. The mystery of the castle and what had happened and what will happen, the whole atmosphere, kept me engaged throughout the book. The mood was bleak and twisted, a bit hopeless too. This version of Morana was also interesting to read, so if you're a fan of the Slavic pantheon, atmospheric stories with freaky castles, dangerous woods, all things dead and alive that could hurt you, complicated characters, and engaging mystery, this could be a book for you. It's also a perfect winter read.
