Far from the Tree by Robin Benway

4.0

Ugh, 4.5 stars.

"I'll still love you, no matter what. Just like you love me, no matter what. Right?"

I’m going to make this review spoiler free because everyone needs to read this!
I was so happy with all of the representation and themes in this book. There were really important discussions about teen pregnancy, being gay and a lot about what is love.
As our main characters are all teenagers, it’s easy to follow their thoughts - especially as it has 3 different point of views for each of the characters.
My only critique is that the plot of finding the biological mum was very much a side plot, whereas I thought it would be a major feature in the book. Yet, this in no way took away anything from the meaning of the book.
As a little fyi, coming from a family that fosters children, there were a few things that in the modern UK care system would not have been allowed to happen. This annoyed me a little bit, but also care systems differ for different countries (I assume this book took place in America) and it was meant for the convenience of the novel.
I would have loved to give this a 5 star, but it has to be about 4.75 just because I’m really disappointed about finding the biological mum. It seemed to easy for real life situations that have taken place in the care system. If it was introduced earlier in the book and explored more, it would have definitely been a 5 star rating.
However, in no way let that put you off reading this book. It discusses really important issues, that I have never read about in a YA contemporary novel before. It is heart-wrenching and such an important read.
